Truck drivers on Wednesday blocked the Benin-Ore highway at Ofosu, near Benin-City, Edo State, in protest against the killing of two truck drivers by suspected herdsmen Tuesday night.
The suspected killers were said to have also made away with an undisclosed amount of money stolen from their victims.
The angry drivers, who blocked the highway at the military checkpoint, refused pleas by other motorists to vacate the road.
They reportedly insisted that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State must come to address them before they would open up the road for use.
Security personnel at the checkpoint, it was learnt, had to abandon their posts due to the chaotic situation.
“It is a terrible experience of getting stuck on the road. The protesting drivers said two of their colleagues were robbed and killed by suspected herdsmen. We are all stuck here and our business has been disrupted,” said a motorist caught in the gridlock.
Contacted, police spokesman for the Edo Police Command, Kontongs Bello, confirmed the incident.
