Trump Taunts Maduro’s ‘Dance’ While Hailing U.S. Raid, Warning on Midterms

US President Donald Trump has accused captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro of imitating his dance moves, while listing a series of alleged crimes, during a wide-ranging and unconventional speech to Republican lawmakers in Washington.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Trump-Kennedy Center, recently renamed by a board appointed by the president, Trump celebrated what he described as a “brilliant” US special forces raid that led to the capture of Maduro and his wife over the weekend.

“He gets up there and he tries to imitate my dance a little bit,” Trump said, referring to Maduro’s frequent public dancing during rising tensions with the United States. Trump added that the Venezuelan leader was “violent,” accusing him of mass killings and torture, including operating a torture facility in Caracas, though he provided no details or evidence.

The remarks followed reports that Maduro’s public defiance, including dancing on stage as US forces gathered in the Caribbean in late 2025, helped convince White House officials that decisive action was necessary. Maduro often danced to a remix of his slogan, “No War, Yes Peace,” while Trump is known for dancing to the disco hit “Y.M.C.A.” at political rallies.

While hailing the military operation, Trump offered few specifics about his administration’s plans for oil-rich Venezuela, beyond reiterating that the United States would ensure stability following Maduro’s removal.

Much of the speech, however, focused on domestic politics, as Trump formally launched his push toward the 2026 US midterm elections. He warned Republicans that failure to retain control of Congress could lead to renewed impeachment efforts by Democrats.

“You’ve got to win the midterms,” Trump said. “If we don’t win, they’ll find a reason to impeach me.”

Trump, who was impeached for a second time following the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, noted that his speech coincided with the fifth anniversary of the attack. He also reminded lawmakers that he had pardoned nearly 1,600 January 6 rioters on his first day back in office on January 20, 2025.

During the address, the president veered into cultural issues, including his administration’s ban on transgender women in women’s and girls’ sports, at one point acting out an exaggerated imitation of a weightlifter. Trump said his wife, Melania Trump, disapproved of such performances, calling them “unpresidential.”

“She hates it when I dance,” Trump added, jokingly asking, “Could you imagine FDR dancing?”

Turning back to the economy, Trump urged Republicans to focus on healthcare costs, inflation, and the cost of living, acknowledging voter concerns despite his insistence that economic policies are delivering results.

“I wish you could explain to me what the hell’s going on with the mind of the public,” Trump told lawmakers. “Because we have the right policy.”

The speech drew fresh reactions across the political spectrum, blending foreign policy drama, midterm election strategy, and Trump’s trademark personal style into a moment that underscored the unconventional tone of his presidency.
