Trump Threatens Tariffs on Europe to Pressure Greenland Acquisition
Washington, D.C., USA — US President Donald Trump has threatened European nations with trade tariffs unless they agree to support his controversial plan for the United States to acquire Greenland, the autonomous territory of Denmark.
Trump announced that, beginning February 1, 2026, eight European countries — including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland — could face a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the US, with the rate potentially rising to 25% by June 1. The tariffs, he said, will remain in effect until a Greenland purchase agreement is finalised.
The president framed the threatened tariffs as essential for US national security, citing Greenland’s strategic location and natural resources. He also warned that rivals such as Russia and China could benefit if the US fails to secure the territory. (reuters.com)

Denmark and Greenland have strongly rejected any proposal to sell the island, reaffirming Greenland’s autonomy and Denmark’s sovereignty. The move has sparked concern across NATO and the EU, with European leaders warning that linking trade policy to territorial demands could damage diplomatic relations.
Recent reports indicate increased security measures in Greenland and ongoing protests among local residents advocating for self-determination. Lawmakers in the US and Europe are reportedly engaging in back-channel diplomacy to reduce tensions.
The tariff threat underscores a rare and contentious use of economic pressure in foreign policy, raising questions about the future of US-European relations and Arctic geopolitics.
