Trump to meet New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani amid political tensions
US President Donald Trump announced he will host New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani for a meeting at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21, despite repeatedly attacking the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist during his recent campaign.
Trump, while falsely claiming that Mamdani is a “communist,” confirmed the meeting on his Truth Social platform. Mamdani’s spokesperson, Dora Pekec, stated that the incoming mayor will meet with the President “to discuss public safety, economic security, and the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago.”

The meeting brings together two Queens-born politicians, but their policies diverge sharply. While Trump highlights record gains on Wall Street during his presidency, Mamdani focuses on affordable housing, childcare, free city bus rides, and city-run grocery stores to address the affordability crisis for over 8 million New Yorkers.
Mamdani made history as the first mayoral candidate to surpass the one-million-vote mark in New York since 1969. However, experts have questioned his ability to deliver on his ambitious and broad-reaching promises.
During the campaign, Trump disparaged Mamdani’s South Asian heritage and threatened to cut federal funding for New York under his administration. “Mandami, whatever the hell his name is,” Trump said, deliberately mispronouncing Mamdani’s surname.
Mamdani has remained defiant, calling out Trump during his victory rally earlier this month: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you — turn the volume up!” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later confirmed that the President watched Mamdani speak.
