Trump Vows Economic Recovery as Americans Face High Cost of Living

US President Donald Trump has promised Americans an impending economic boom, while blaming his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, for persistently high prices that continue to fuel voter frustration and weigh on his approval ratings.

In a nationally televised address from the White House on the night of December 17, Trump said he inherited a failing economy and was now turning it around. “Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I’m fixing it,” the 79-year-old president declared at the close of his first year back in office.

Trump acknowledged public concern over the cost of living, particularly gasoline and grocery prices, but insisted inflation was easing. He said prices were “falling rapidly” and pledged further improvements, even as he later conceded that inflation remains an issue, albeit one he claimed is being outpaced by wage growth.

In a surprise move, the president announced that 1.45 million US military service members would receive $1,776 “warrior dividend” bonus checks before Christmas. He said the payments would be funded by tariff revenues, with the amount symbolising the 1776 founding of the United States, ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Trump also projected strong growth ahead, saying the country was on the brink of “an economic boom the likes of which the world has never seen,” coinciding with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico.

However, the speech—billed as an outline of Trump’s economic agenda for the rest of his second term—was dominated by attacks on Democrats, President Biden, and migrants, whom he accused of taking American jobs.

Economists remain divided over Trump’s aggressive tariff policy. While the White House argues tariffs are boosting domestic manufacturing and investment, many analysts say they have contributed to higher consumer prices, even if the overall impact has been less severe than initially predicted.

Recent economic data paints a mixed picture. US employers added 64,000 jobs in November, driven largely by healthcare and construction, while manufacturing jobs declined for a seventh consecutive month. Polls show inflation and affordability remain voters’ top concerns.

A PBS News/NPR/Marist poll published on December 17 showed 57 per cent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, his worst rating yet on the issue. A YouGov poll released a day earlier found that 52 per cent believe the economy is worsening under his leadership.

Political pressures are also mounting ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with Republicans suffering notable losses in recent state and local races. In response, Trump has stepped up domestic travel, promising to “make America affordable again,” while Vice-President JD Vance has urged voters to remain patient as the administration pushes its economic agenda.
