Register as a new party, APC advises PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) it to consider registering as a new political party if it believes it is no longer strong enough to win elections.

This suggestion was made by the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, during a press briefing in Osogbo on Friday. The media chat followed the official defection of several PDP leaders and hundreds of their supporters to the APC.

This comes amidst various leadership challenges of the party, with the recent being the contention over the National secretary position.

“If PDP today believed they have become so weakened and battered that the party is no longer a mechanism for elections, they should go and register as another political entity,” Basiru said.

He added, “By constitutional provision, Nigeria can’t be a one-party state, because section 221 of the constitution allows people to vie for offices with the instrumentality of political parties, and there are procedures for the registration of political parties. But as far as I am concerned, we are committed to building a party that is virile, that resonate with the masses of Nigeria people.”

Senator Basiru also praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, saying the president has “shown true and courageous leadership” and is leading the country in a direction that is “enjoying international rating and recognition from global economic and financial bodies.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 Osun State governorship election, Basiru expressed confidence that the APC would reclaim the state from Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration. He criticized the PDP-led state government for what he described as poor performance.

“The present Osun government can’t benefit the Osun people,” he said. “The government has failed in so many sectors like education, health, and agriculture. Despite the quantum increase in the allocation to the state, it has not reflected in terms of qualitative governance in Osun State.”

Senator Basiru, speaking on behalf of APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, presented party symbols to two prominent new members from the PDP: Alhaji Tajudeen Adekunle and Mr. Ismail Adisa, popularly known as Adogan.
