Two injured as 40-foot container falls off Ojuelegba Lagos Bridge
A 40ft container fell off a Lagos bridge on a Toyota Corolla Sunday evening causing serious injuries to two people.
The incident happened on the popular Ojuelegba Bridge, Funsho Williams Avenue, inward Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
This prompted the Lagos State Government to temporarily shut the bridge to vehicular traffic.
This came months after a container-laden truck fell off the bridge, killing nine bus passengers.
In a statement on Sunday night, the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the container dropped on a Toyota car.
He added that the police and other emergency responders arrived at the scene promptly to rescue the occupants of the car.
According to him, out of the three occupants of the trapped car, only one person came out unhurt and was allowed to go home immediately.
He said, “Traffic Officer Olajide Olukoga ‘Bravo’ who led the LASTMA rescue operations at the scene of the accident confirmed that a 40ft container fell on a Toyota Corolla car (JJJ 811 FB) at the top Ojuelegba Bridge inwards Stadium.
“The remaining two rescued casualties (an adult male and a female) were rushed to hospital by an ambulance belonging to Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
“Policemen from Surulere Police Division were on the scene to provide adequate security while the entire Ojuelegba Bridge inwards Stadium was temporarily closed and traffic diverted to the service lane by LASTMA as rescue and recovery operations are ongoing.”
