Two Killed as Anambra Police Smash Gang Behind Senator Ngige’s Convoy Attack

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested members of a criminal gang linked to the attack on the convoy of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, recording a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on violent crime across the state.

Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted a five-man gang at the Enugwu Agidi junction during a coordinated ambush. The suspects, believed to be armed robbers and cultists with alleged ties to a banned secessionist group, reportedly opened fire on the officers, leading to a fierce gun battle that lasted about two hours.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the exchange, while three others escaped with injuries and are currently being tracked by security agencies.

Recovered items from the scene included one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted charms, a red cult beret, and a black Toyota Highlander allegedly used by the gang for operations.

In a significant revelation, one of the suspects, before dying, reportedly confessed to participating in the earlier attack on Senator Ngige’s convoy. The suspect also admitted membership of the Vikings confraternity strike force, claiming the attack was a retaliatory operation following the killing of a gang member by a rival cult group.

Commending the operatives for their bravery, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, ordered an intensified manhunt for the fleeing suspects and directed hospitals and medical facilities to promptly report cases of gunshot injuries to the nearest police station.

The police said the operation forms part of broader efforts to dismantle cult networks, armed robbery syndicates and violent groups threatening public safety in Anambra State, assuring residents of continued commitment to protecting lives and property.
