U.S accuses Iran of plot to assassinate Israeli Envoy

The United States has accused Iran of orchestrating a failed assassination plot targeting Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, in what officials describe as a dangerous escalation of the long-standing conflict between the two nations.

According to a senior U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity, the plot was initiated by Iran’s elite Quds Force—part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—in late 2024 and was successfully disrupted earlier this year.

“The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat,” the official stated. “This is just the latest in a long history of Iran’s global lethal targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with them—something that should deeply worry every country where there is an Iranian presence.”

No specific details were provided regarding how the plot was uncovered or neutralized. The Iranian mission to the United Nations declined to comment on the allegations.

U.S. intelligence has long warned of Iranian operatives seeking targets in Latin America, where Tehran maintains strategic ties with Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro. The alleged plot follows a series of retaliatory strikes between Iran and Israel, beginning with Israel’s April 1, 2024 bombing of the Iranian embassy complex in Damascus, which killed several senior Revolutionary Guard officers.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel, prompting a broader Israeli military campaign a year later that reportedly killed over 1,000 people in Iran. The United States, Israel’s closest ally, joined in targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Iran’s support for Hamas, the Palestinian militant group responsible for the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, has further intensified regional hostilities. Israel’s subsequent military response has devastated Gaza and expanded to strikes in Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Qatar, and Yemen.

Israeli intelligence has repeatedly accused the Quds Force of plotting attacks on Israeli and Jewish interests abroad. Australia recently expelled Iran’s ambassador over alleged involvement in arson attacks on a synagogue and a kosher restaurant.

Latin America has previously witnessed Middle East-linked violence, notably the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people. Argentina and Israel blamed Hezbollah, allegedly acting on Iran’s orders.

Despite its government’s adversarial stance toward Israel, Iran remains home to a historic Jewish community. Mexico, which also hosts a significant Jewish population, has maintained diplomatic ties with Israel while cautiously supporting investigations into alleged war crimes in Gaza.

The latest revelations underscore the global dimensions of the Iran-Israel conflict and raise concerns about the safety of diplomatic missions in regions far from the Middle East.
