U.S. Commits $413 Million to Strengthen Nigeria’s Counter-Terrorism Operations

The United States government has approved $413 million in support to strengthen Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations and improve regional security in West Africa. The funding, part of the 2026 U.S. National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA), is intended to enhance the operational capacity of Nigerian security forces and support efforts against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other insurgent groups.

The allocation will fund training, military equipment, and intelligence-sharing programs to combat terrorism, banditry, and maritime threats in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West regions. Security analysts describe the move as a reinforcement of Nigeria’s strategic role in regional stability and counter-terrorism initiatives across the Lake Chad Basin.

Officials from the Nigerian government welcomed the partnership, noting that collaboration with the U.S. will improve domestic security capabilities and strengthen ongoing counter-insurgency operations. The development also underscores a broader U.S. policy to enhance African security partnerships, including the creation of dedicated offices for African Affairs and expanded engagement through AFRICOM.

With this funding, Nigeria’s fight against terrorism gains a critical boost, signaling renewed international support for the country’s efforts to secure its borders, protect citizens, and restore peace to vulnerable regions.
