U.S. State of Georgia Proclaims Nnamdi Kanu Honorary Citizen
A U.S. state, Georgia, has proclaimed Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an honorary citizen, a move that has reignited international attention on his prolonged detention and legal battle in Nigeria.
The proclamation, issued by the Georgia Secretary of State, recognizes Kanu’s advocacy activities while he resides outside the United States. A copy of the honorary citizenship certificate, dated several years back, resurfaced online this week, triggering widespread reactions across social and political spaces in Nigeria and the diaspora.
Kanu, a British-Nigerian separatist leader, has been in the custody of the Nigerian government since 2021 following his controversial arrest and extradition from Kenya. He is currently standing trial on terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, charges his legal team insists are unconstitutional and politically motivated.

The honorary citizenship disclosure comes amid renewed public debate over Kanu’s case, following recent court proceedings and persistent calls by IPOB supporters for his release. Several international human rights groups have also raised concerns over his arrest, detention conditions, and the legality of his rendition.
Meanwhile, fact-checking organisations have dismissed viral claims suggesting Kanu has been released, clarifying that circulating videos allegedly showing his freedom are from 2017, when he was previously granted bail before leaving Nigeria.
The Georgia proclamation is not unprecedented. The state has previously conferred honorary citizenship on notable Nigerian figures, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, as part of its engagement with global political and civic leaders.
Analysts say the resurfacing of the Georgia proclamation may further strain diplomatic and political discourse surrounding Kanu’s detention, especially as his supporters push for increased international intervention. However, Nigerian authorities maintain that the IPOB leader must face trial under the country’s laws.
As legal proceedings continue, Kanu’s case remains one of Nigeria’s most polarising political and security issues, drawing attention from both domestic and international observers.
