UI students protest increase in tuition fee, others

Students of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday protested against an increase in school fees and other issues.

The protest which started as early as 8am paralysed academic and other socio-economic activities of the school.

The protesters moving in large numbers blocked all the entrances to the institution.

No one was allowed into the school. They also moved from one faculty to another to ensure that academic activities did not hold.

The students warned that no video recording of the protest must be done by anyone.

They said the school management had not been fair to them.

A few months ago, the school increased school frees from 65,000 to N230,000 and N412,000 for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The students said they were not asking for a reduction, but outright removal of the increment, and that those who had already paid should immediately be refunded the excess.

One of the protesting students said, “We are protesting against injustice and insensitivity of the school authorities to our plight.”

“Can you imagine the authorities saying they will be shedding power henceforth, which means there are days we will be in darkness. How do they expect us to study?

“Secondly, they have hiked school fees astronomically to an unimaginable proportion. Do they want us to abandon our studies? Our parents are saying there is no money. Even feeding is difficult and we are still trying to wriggle out of this; they are bringing hike in tuition fees. We cannot take this any longer. Enough is enough.

“The third issue is the victimization of some of our colleagues who protested last time. The police have arrested them and up till now, they are still being detained for saying no to injustice. They are hurting us and they don’t want us to complain.”
