UK tightens post-study work rules for international students

UK tightens post-study work rules for international students

London, October 23, 2025 — The United Kingdom has unveiled a series of sweeping immigration reforms that will significantly impact international students and skilled foreign workers, with changes set to take effect from January 1, 2027.

Under the new regulations, international graduates will have just 18 months to secure employment after completing their studies—down from the current two-year post-study work period. The UK Home Office says the move is designed to ensure graduates transition more efficiently into the workforce and contribute meaningfully to the British economy.

“It comes after data clearly showed that many holders had not transitioned into graduate-level employment as intended,” the Home Office stated on October 14.

Stricter Financial Requirements for Student Visas

Beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year, international students will face tougher financial proof requirements. While the new minimum threshold has yet to be disclosed, current standards require students in London to show access to £1,483 per month for up to nine months, and £1,136 per month for those studying outside the capital.

Employers to Pay More for Foreign Talent

The Immigration Skills Charge (ISC), a fee paid by UK employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers, will rise by 32%. The Home Office says the additional revenue will be reinvested in training British workers and reducing dependency on overseas recruitment. Parliamentary proceedings to formalize the increase are expected to begin later this week.

English Language Proficiency Now Mandatory

In a bid to promote integration, migrants will be required to meet an A-level equivalent standard in English across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test will be administered by a Home Office–approved provider and verified during the visa application process.

“If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part,” said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Boost for Highly Skilled Migrants

The reforms also include plans to double the intake of highly skilled migrants through specialized visa routes. The expanded list will welcome top-tier researchers, designers, and creatives in film and television—sectors deemed vital to maintaining the UK’s global competitiveness.

Further updates to the Global Talent route are expected in 2026, signaling the government’s intent to balance tighter controls with strategic openness in high-growth industries.
