Ukrainian forces launch strikes on Russian border, set oil depot ablaze
Ukrainian forces launched missile and drone attacks on Wednesday morning, targeting Russia’s border regions of Rostov and Bryansk.
The strikes reportedly set a Russian oil depot ablaze and damaged an industrial facility, marking an escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Officials confirmed two separate attacks: one in the southern Rostov region and another in the western Bryansk region, both of which have seen cross-border assaults since Moscow’s nearly three-year-long invasion of Ukraine.
In Bryansk, Kyiv confirmed targeting an oil depot allegedly supplying Russian occupying forces. Videos from the area showed a massive fireball illuminating the night sky, with air raid sirens blaring in the background.
Meanwhile, in the Rostov region, a missile strike damaged an industrial facility in the port city of Taganrog, according to the region’s governor.
The strikes followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for air defense systems to be actively deployed to protect lives rather than kept in storage.
Zelensky praised the “Tangible blows against Russian targets” and emphasized that these attacks would help bring the war to a close.

“In a Telegram post, he confirmed that Ukraine had struck military facilities in Russian territory, as well as fuel and energy infrastructure supporting Russia’s aggression against our state and people.”
As the war continues, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on Russian oil and gas infrastructure, damaging Moscow’s energy sector and costing billions of dollars.
The Ukrainian military noted that Russia was using the Bryansk facility as a key loading point for the Druzhba oil pipeline, a critical route for Russian oil heading to much of central Europe.
“A massive fire broke out,” Ukraine’s general staff was quoted as saying, but they did not comment on the Rostov attack.
Alexander Bogomaz, governor of the Bryansk region, reported that Ukraine had attacked a “production facility” with drones, although the fire had been extinguished.
Refineries and oil depots are vital to Russia’s economy, with some facilities even equipped with air defense systems to fend off attacks.
As a result of these ongoing strikes, Russian companies have redirected oil to locations farther from Ukraine, as some Ukrainian drones have reached hundreds of kilometers into Russian territory.
Ukraine defends its attacks as a legitimate response to Moscow’s strikes on its energy infrastructure, which have left millions without power.
