Updated: Facebook, Instagram restored after global outages

Meta says Facebook, Messenger and Instagram services have been restored after users worldwide were unable to access the social media platforms on Tuesday.

Meta, the parent company of the platforms, later apologised over the widespread outages.

DownDetector, a site that monitors internet service outages, said it received more than 500,000 reports of problems by US Facebook users and more than 70,000 reported problems with Instagram as of 10.30am.

The glitches also were reported in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Germany, Argentina, Japan and elsewhere.

Facebook is the world’s largest social media platform with three billion active monthly users.

Instagram has about 1.35 billion users, according to the latest data.

Meta Tuesday night said it had fixed the issue that caused the sites to go down. “We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Andy Stone, a spokesman for Meta, wrote on X
