Updated: Women’s World Cup: Nigeria qualify for round of 16, with 0-0 against Ireland

Super Falcons of Nigeria played a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland on Monday in the ongoing Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerian team, with this result, has thus advanced to the Women’s World Cup knockout stage, the round of 16.

They advanced to the knockout stage with five points from two draws and one win.

The Super Falcons had earlier played a draw against Canada and a 3-2 win against Australia.

Before the game, Nigeria led Group B with four points and a goal difference ahead of Canada who also have the same number of points. Australia was third with three points.

But Australia came back to top Group B with six points after thrashing Canada 4-0 and got a place in the last 16.

Nigerian team is the first African nation to qualify for the knockout stages at this year’s tournament.

They will be looking to match their best ever performance at the Women’s World Cup, a quarter-final appearance in 1999.

The Super Falcons will find out their next opponents when Group D draws to a close tomorrow.
