US Army Lt-Colonel Brandon Shah Killed in Old Dominion University Shooting

A United States Army lieutenant colonel and military science instructor, Brandon Shah, has tragically been killed in a shooting at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia. The fatal attack took place inside a classroom on Thursday morning during a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) session.

The gunman, identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former member of the Army National Guard, opened fire in the classroom, killing Lt-Col. Shah and injuring two other ROTC members. Students in the class bravely confronted the assailant, ultimately preventing further casualties. Investigators confirmed that Jalloh was killed during the incident.

Authorities revealed that Jalloh had previously served time in prison after pleading guilty in 2016 to attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State (ISIS). He was released from federal custody in December 2024. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local law enforcement agencies are investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism.

Lt-Col. Shah, a decorated Army veteran and alumnus of ODU, had served multiple deployments in the Middle East and was widely respected as a mentor and leader. He had served as the chair of the university’s Military Science Department, educating and inspiring young cadets.

The shooting prompted a campus lockdown, and the university suspended classes to ensure safety and facilitate the investigation. Counseling services have been made available to students and staff.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger paid tribute to the fallen officer, describing him as a dedicated mentor who inspired young cadets to follow a life of service. “Shah didn’t just lead a life of service to our country; he taught and led others to follow that path,” she said.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the attack, including how the suspect obtained the weapon and whether he acted alone.
