US Lawmaker Optimistic Nigeria Can Defeat Terrorism Amid Washington Security Talks
A visiting United States congressman, Rep. Riley M. Moore, says terrorism in Nigeria can be decisively crushed if the resolutions reached during the recent high-level security talks between the United States and Nigeria are fully implemented.
Moore spoke after a closed-door meeting between a US Congressional delegation and Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, where both parties discussed plans to strengthen security cooperation and dismantle terrorist networks—particularly in the North-East.
He revealed that “concrete steps and actions” had been agreed upon, which could significantly improve national security, disrupt armed groups, and help end the killing of Christians in the Middle Belt. He added that religiously motivated violence has drawn the attention of the US President and remains a personal priority for him.

The congressman praised the Nigerian government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the successful rescue of 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren, describing the operation as evidence of Nigeria’s increasing responsiveness to its security challenges. He said the rescue aligns with the emergency security framework declared by President Tinubu.
Moore also highlighted progress toward a cooperative security framework, pointing to the establishment of a joint Nigeria–US task force as a sign of deepening bilateral collaboration.
“The US sense of urgency was well received, and I believe a framework for cooperation is now within reach,” he stated.
While noting that more work lies ahead, Moore commended Nigeria for showing readiness to partner with the US on combating terrorism, insecurity, and human rights concerns. He stressed that goodwill must now be backed by practical on-ground actions to achieve lasting peace and stability.
He expressed optimism about sustained engagement between both countries, saying recent developments indicate movement in the right direction.
