US Mission Halts Routine Updates in Nigeria Amid Funding Lapse
The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of routine updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, citing funding challenges linked to a lapse in US government appropriations.
In a brief notice, the Mission explained that the decision is part of cost-saving measures following the funding constraints affecting several US government operations. As a result, regular informational posts and engagements on its social media platforms will be paused.

However, the Mission clarified that the suspension does not affect critical services. It stressed that visa and passport services in Nigeria will continue as scheduled, subject to operational capacity, and that only non-essential communications are being scaled back.
The US Mission added that it will still use its platforms to share urgent security or safety information when necessary. Members of the public seeking updates on consular services were advised to rely on official US government websites for the most current information during the period.
The development comes amid broader US government funding challenges, which have forced several agencies and overseas missions to reduce non-essential activities while maintaining core functions.
