Venezuela Says 100 Killed in U.S. Military Operation That Ousted President Maduro

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello has announced that at least 100 people were killed during a U.S. military operation over the weekend that resulted in the removal and capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, Venezuelan authorities said Wednesday. Speaking on state television, Cabello said this marked the first official casualty figure released since the raid, noting that civilians were among the dead, although he did not break down the numbers by category. Previously, the Venezuelan military had published a list of 23 soldiers killed during the operation, while Cuba reported 32 of its military and intelligence personnel stationed in Venezuela were also killed. Cabello claimed that a significant portion of Maduro’s security detail was “killed in cold blood” during the assault, which Venezuelan officials have condemned as a barbaric attack. (Anadolu Ajansı)

According to the minister, both Maduro and Flores sustained injuries during the raid. Maduro suffered a leg injury, while Flores sustained a head wound during their detention. Footage later released from New York, where the couple was taken after their capture, showed Maduro limping as he was escorted off a helicopter by U.S. agents, while Flores appeared with visible bruises, and her legal team has requested further medical examinations, citing possible rib injuries. While no U.S. military fatalities have been reported, U.S. officials confirmed that seven American personnel were injured during the operation. (AP News)

In response to the deaths, Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, whom Cabello praised as “courageous,” declared a week of national mourning for members of the armed forces killed in the raid. A state funeral was held in the capital, Caracas, honoring the fallen soldiers. (AP News)

The U.S. has described the operation as a lawful mission, though it has not publicly confirmed casualty figures provided by Caracas. The dramatic events have intensified tensions between the nations and raised concerns across the region about sovereignty, military intervention and geopolitical stability. Additional investigations and international reactions are continuing to unfold. (unb.com.bd)
