Viral video: Abuja Bolt driver apologizes to Rep. Ikwechegh over altercation

Stephen Abuwatseya, a ride-hailing driver, has issued a public apology to Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member for Aba North and South in Abia State.

The apology followed an altercation in Abuja involving the two men over a package delivery.

Addressing the incident which attracted wide attention following the viral video, Abuwatseya expressed “regret” for his role in provoking Ikwechegh and extended an apology to Nigerians as well.

He appealed for the matter to be put to rest, stating, “Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya. I had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh a few days ago. I actually want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger.

“I want to tell Nigerians that it’s not time for us to start dividing ourselves based on religion, tribes, or regions. We should actually come together, see how we can unite this nation, and move it forward.

“Please, Nigerians, let’s forgive and forget, as it’s even contained in our Lord’s Prayer, that ‘Lord, please forgive us, as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ For there is no justice without forgiveness. Thank you very much.”

The driver also expressed gratitude to his family and supporters: “I want to use this medium to thank my family members, my parents, my brothers, my uncles, and everybody that stood by me. I want to thank all of you. I love you all. Thank you. God bless Nigeria.”

Earlier reports indicated that Ikwechegh was released on bail of N500,000 after appearing before the Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja. Video footage captured Ikwechegh allegedly assaulting Abuwatseya, leading to charges filed by the Inspector-General of Police’s office. The court, presided over by His Worship, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, heard charges of abuse of office, assault, and threats.

Ikwechegh entered a not-guilty plea, and his counsel’s bail request was accepted, with the court setting bail conditions of N500,000 and two sureties who reside within the jurisdiction. The case has been adjourned until November 8.
