We gave it away, says devastated Bruno Fernandes after Man Utd shocking 3-4 late loss to Chelsea
Bruno Fernandes has admitted that Manchester United “gave it away” to Chelsea after their late capitulation at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.
He lamented that Manchester United switched off for Chelsea’s 111th-minute winning goal in the 4-3 defeat, having known about the home side’s quick corners.
After Cole Palmer had struck a stoppage-time equaliser from the spot, he lashed home the decisive goal via a big deflection following a short and quick corner.
United conceded a whopping 28 shots during the game, having shipped more than 100 efforts on their goal in the previous four matches combined.
Fernandes is disgruntled by United’s defensive fragility and particularly rues the fact that the team knew about Chelsea’s tendency to take quick corners but were unable to stop the winning goal.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the United captain said, “We had the game in our hands and we gave it away. It’s frustrating. It’s difficult to take.
“We had good control in the last few minutes. But they got two chances and scored two goals. From the corner we have to be much quicker. We knew beforehand they take corners and throw-ins quickly.”
He added, “In the last games, we’ve conceded too many shots. It’s about defending your box.”
United now prepare to take on Liverpool in Sunday’s home Premier League clash.
United had hoped for a bounce after defeating the Reds in the dramatic FA Cup quarter-final last month but have failed to win either of their post-international break matches.
“It’s a big game [on Sunday against Liverpool],” said Fernandes. “I don’t need to say anything [to my teammates]. If I need to say anything it’s a problem because this is a massive club.”
