The Federal Government has acknowledged the severity of the country’s security challenges and has committed to resolving the issues before the conclusion of 2024. Dr. Bello Matawalle, the State Minister of Defence, conveyed this assurance in an interview with BBC Hausa.

Matawalle outlined that the government is implementing a proactive strategy to confront bandits, particularly in the troubled northern regions, aiming to pre-emptively address threats before they escalate. He expressed confidence, stating, “God’s willing, from now to November 2024, all security challenges will be overcome.”

The minister highlighted the measures and strategies being employed, emphasizing the importance of pre-emptive action against gunmen in their homes to neutralize potential threats.

Matawalle’s remarks come amid political tensions, with his ongoing feud with the current governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawan Dare, over allegations of corruption and embezzlement of state funds. Despite the personal differences, Matawalle called on the governor to prioritize the security of Zamfara State and collaborate with security forces and the federal government.

He urged the governor to set aside political differences and unite for the greater good of the state, emphasizing that cooperation with security forces and the federal government is essential in overcoming the security challenges faced by many states.

Matawalle concluded by encouraging governors dealing with insecurity issues to work collaboratively with the federal government to find comprehensive solutions for the benefit of their respective states.
