Weststar Sounds Alarm on Fake Mercedes-Benz Parts Flooding Nigerian Market
Mercedes-Benz GLB, Edition 1
Weststar Associates Limited, the authorized general distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria, has issued a stark warning over the growing threat of counterfeit automotive parts, following new global data from Mercedes-Benz revealing the seizure of over 1.5 million fake components in 2024 alone.
The alarming figures stem from 793 coordinated raids worldwide, underscoring what Weststar calls an “increasingly sophisticated” counterfeit operation that endangers lives and erodes trust in the brand.
“Opting for counterfeit or substandard parts might appear to save costs in the short term, but in reality, it exposes customers to much higher risks – both financially and in terms of personal safety,” said Ebere Anenih, Managing Director of Weststar Associates.
A Hidden but Deadly Threat
While fake parts may mimic the look of genuine Mercedes-Benz components, their performance often falls drastically short. Substandard brake pads, inferior filters, and poor-quality lighting systems can result in sudden vehicle failures – creating life-threatening situations for drivers and road users alike.
Weststar emphasized that these unauthorized parts are not just a mechanical risk but a direct safety hazard.
Weststar’s Multi-Pronged Response
In response to the surge in counterfeit parts, Weststar is doubling down on efforts to safeguard customers in Nigeria by partnering with accredited dealers to trace and secure the supply chain; educating customers on identifying fake parts; reinforcing aftersale support through globally approved service centres.
Why genuine parts matter
According to Weststar, Mercedes-Benz genuine parts are manufactured and tested to the brand’s highest global standards, ensuring safety, compatibility, and long-term reliability.
It said the parts also came with manufacturer-backed warranties and installed by factory-trained technicians at authorized service centres.
The statement slso gave the benefits of buying genuine from Weststar’s network as guaranteed safety and performance; durable components backed by warranty; professional installation by certified experts.
It listed the authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers in Nigeria as Barbedos Cars Ltd. – Abuja & Kaduna; M-B Automobile Services Ltd – Lagos; Skymit Motors Ltd – Lagos; Sunny Motors Ltd. – Lagos and Tetralog Nigeria Ltd – Enugu.
Weststar urges all Mercedes-Benz owners to visit authorized service centers to verify the authenticity of their parts and receive expert care.
“Don’t compromise your vehicle or your safety,” Anenih said. “Choose Genuine. Choose Mercedes-Benz.”
It urged people interested in more information or to locate an authorized service centre to visit: www.mercedes-benz.com.ng
