WHO reacts to US withdrawal from agency, wants Trump reconsider action
The World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday it regretted the decision by the new US administration of President Donald Trump to withdraw the country from the UN agency.
“The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the organisation,” WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters, according to AFP.
“We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.”
President Donald Trump, on his first day back in the White House, announced the United States’ withdrawal from WHO, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from public health experts.
Trump cited the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, failure to implement reforms and alleged political influence as reasons for the move.
