Why the U.S. May Need Peace More Than Nigeria | By Reno Omokri
A major security scare unfolded in Washington, D.C. yesterday after two National Guard soldiers were shot and critically wounded near the White House, prompting a temporary lockdown to protect President Donald Trump and top government officials.
While I am grateful that President Trump is safe, the incident serves as yet another reminder of how providence has repeatedly shielded him — including the July 13, 2024 attempt on his life by domestic terrorist Thomas Crooks. Yesterday’s attack underscores the growing crisis of gun violence in the United States, a nation that records over 40,000 gun-related deaths every year.
To put this in context, that figure is more than ten times the number of terror-related deaths recorded in Nigeria, which stood at 565, according to the latest Global Terrorism Index. America remains a great nation, but it is far from perfect. Its social challenges — especially violent crime — often place ordinary citizens at greater risk than many imagine.

Some Nigerians who call for President Trump to invade or “fix” Nigeria should take note: relocating to the United States, especially as a Black person, statistically exposes one to a higher likelihood of gun violence than living in Nigeria.
Yes, Nigeria has security challenges, but we must be honest enough to ask: When last did we hear of a shooting meters away from Aso Rock Presidential Villa?
The glamour of foreign nations can be deceptive. The rich also cry. All that glitters is not gold. And despite our problems, Nigeria has never recorded a year in which over 40,000 people were killed or injured by gun crime — as happens routinely in the United States.
This is why Nigerians must remain steadfast and support the ongoing efforts of President Bola Tinubu and our armed forces, who are working to strengthen national security for all citizens, regardless of religion, region or political affiliation.
Nigeria is our home. We must defend it, believe in it, and build it.
