Why we hacked CBN website – Anonymous

–   Our website secure, says CBN

An online network known for launching cyberattacks against government institutions, Anonymous, has admitted that it brought down the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria, saying it was done in support of the #EndSARS protesters.

But the apex bank said the claim was false, insisting that its website was secure and adequately protected.

A tweet by one of the affiliates of the Anonymous, @loriansynaro, stated, “#Anonymous #OpNigeria #EndSARS #EndSarsNow. The Nigerian central bank website has been taken #Offline. https://cbn.gov.ng | TANGO DOWN.” This was retweeted by Anonymous.

There had been major concerns over the CBN website displaying the message, “500 – Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.”

Anonymous was said to have earlier hacked the Twitter account of the National Broadcasting Commission accused of implementing stiff media regulations through its Broadcast Code which increased the fine for hate speech to N5 million.

The CBN, however, said the information from Anonymous and its affiliate was not true, adding that it was meant to cause confusion.

A statement issued Friday by the apex bank signed by its acting Director of Corporate Communication, Osita Nwanisobi, assured the public that the “website is adequately protected and that there is no cause for alarm.”

A number of major streets across the country have been blocked by the #EndSARS protesters, who are youths protesting police brutality and extrajudicial killings
