Workers resume today as labour unions suspend strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their nationwide strike that commenced on Tuesday.
This was announced Wednesday night after leaders of the unions met with representatives of the Federal Government at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) Abuja.
The industrial action was called to protest the physical attack on the President of the NLC, Joe Ajero, with some other labour leaders in Owerri, Imo State, by thugs alleged to be agents of the state government.
The labour claimed the police gave the thugs protection while Ajero was being beaten. He came out with swollen face and had to be rushed to the hospital.
Before the strike suspension, the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had at an earlier meeting in Aso Rock, apologised on behalf of the government for the brutalisation of Ajaero.
He also announced that two of those suspected to have attacked the labour leader had been arrested.
National Deputy President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, said the strike was suspended based on the trust the unions had in Ribadu.
He said, “The NECs of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike.
“We did this based on our trust in the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his word.
“We also saw that he wasn’t playing politics with our demands and he was ready and promised to follow up with everything.”
