11 Killed in Cartel-Linked Attack at Mexican Football Match
At least 11 people have been killed following a cartel-linked gun attack at a local football match in Mexico, in one of the deadliest assaults on a sporting event in recent months.
The attack occurred at a community football field in Salamanca, located in Guanajuato state, shortly after a match had ended. According to authorities, armed assailants opened fire on spectators and players, causing panic as people attempted to flee the area.
Local officials confirmed that 10 victims died at the scene, while another later died in hospital. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment. Security forces were swiftly deployed to the area, and the venue was cordoned off as investigations began.

The Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office said preliminary findings suggest the attack was linked to organised crime, amid ongoing turf wars between rival criminal groups operating in the region. Guanajuato has repeatedly ranked among Mexico’s most violent states, largely due to clashes between drug cartels fighting for control of territory, fuel theft routes, and trafficking corridors.
Authorities believe the assault may have been intended as a targeted attack, although those present at the match were caught in the violence. No arrests have been announced as of the time of reporting, but officials say a manhunt is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The Mexican government and state authorities condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act of violence and pledging to strengthen security in affected communities. Local leaders also expressed concern that public sporting events, traditionally considered safe spaces, are increasingly being affected by criminal violence.
The incident has renewed national debate over public safety, cartel violence, and the ability of security agencies to protect civilians, especially in regions plagued by long-running criminal conflicts.
