11 students arrested in Kano over killing of two colleagues

The Kano Police Command has arrested 11 students suspected to be connected to the killings of two secondary school students in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State.

Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the arrest Thursday, explaining that the 11 student suspects are already under interrogation to get to the roots of their alleged involvement in the killings of the two boys.

He assured that the police would do all it could to unravel the circumstances behind the killings of the students, and all those who are party to it would be prosecuted.

Already, the State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, has ordered a thorough investigation into the mysterious deaths of the students who are of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi.

The deceased students, Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were allegedly attacked by colleagues using local metal objects known as “Gwale-Gwale.”

The Commissioner, speaking through the Ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Baffa Muhammad, assured that the Kano State Government would conduct a fair and transparent investigation, promising that justice will be served for all parties involved.

“It was reported that the brutal act followed a decision taken by some senior students to treat the deceased as punishment for allegedly committing an offence,” they said.

The Permanent Secretary, who had already visited the school, cautioned students to be vigilant and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“You should avoid taking law into your hands, but rather make sure you report any matter of concern to the school authority for appropriate action,” the Permanent Secretary was quoted as saying.

He also sympathized with the deceased families and other relatives, adding that, “On behalf of the Kano State Government, Ministry of Education, and good people of Kano State, we extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for Almighty Allah to grant their souls Jannatul Firdaus.”

In his remarks, the Director of the Secondary School, Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Abbas Abdullahi, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that students must not misuse their privileges and take the law into their own hands.

“Kano State Government has promised to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident,” he added.
