12 Killed as Market Women’s Bus Collides with Truck in Cross River
No fewer than 12 persons, including over 10 market women, have reportedly been killed in a road accident in northern Cross River State while returning from a local market.
The tragic incident occurred over the weekend at Iwuru community along the Calabar–Ikom Highway, when a commercial bus conveying market women and their goods was involved in a head-on collision with a truck. The crash also claimed the lives of the bus driver and his conductor.
A resident of the area, Ohubu Okam, described the accident as devastating, noting that it happened on Saturday afternoon.

“It is so disheartening that over ten market women and two others, including the driver and conductor, lost their lives in that accident at Iwuru,” Okam said.
He disclosed that the bodies of the victims have been deposited at the General Hospital, Akamkpa, where relatives have been asked to report for identification.
“Some of the women were badly crushed in the accident. Their relatives have been asked to identify them through their clothing,” he added.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Mr Daniel Agbor, described the incident as “mind-boggling”, blaming it on the poor condition of the Calabar–Ikom Highway.
Agbor lamented that the about 80-kilometre stretch of the highway is severely dilapidated and has become a recurring hotspot for fatal accidents, urging the government to urgently intervene to prevent further loss of lives.
