2022 WASSCE will not clash with UTME — WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says there is no clash in its examination dates with this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The council’s Head of National Office, Mr Patrick Areghan, made the clarification during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lagos.
Areghan was reacting to the concerns raised by some stakeholders, including parents, that a clash might endanger the performance of some candidates in both examinations.
Reports have it that the Federal Ministry of Education had in a circular dated April 5, titled: Update on 2022 Examinations Timetable for all Examination Bodies, addressed to all the test bodies in the country, showed a clash in date.
The clash in date was for both the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), organised by WAEC, and UTME organised by JAMB.
The circular was said to have been signed by Mr David Gende, a Director, overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
Areghan said, “Yes, I have seen it too, but that date is not correct.
“I want to assure the concerned stakeholders and indeed the general public that there is nothing to worry about as there is no clash in dates for our examination with the UTME, as seen in that circular.
“The UTME starts on Friday, May 6 and ends on May 14.
“Our examination for school candidates which is the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) starts on May 16 and not May 6, as is seen on the said circular,” he stated.
NAN reports that a copy of the authentic WASSCE timetable made available to this correspondent confirmed the date for the commencement of the examination.
“From our authentic timetable for candidates for the 2022 examination too, it shows that the papers slated for May 9, are what we call ‘Moving Exams’.
”It is just for the candidates to choose what they want to do for the practicals. Should any candidate fall in this category, he or she will be easily taken care of, by way of rescheduling another date for them.
“Therefore, aside from this, I want to clarify that there is no clash with the JAMB-organised examination whatsoever.
“The UTME ends on May 14, while our WASSCE starts two days after, being May 16 and not May 6,” the WAEC boss noted.

Kano governor gives secondary students 10,000 free JAMB forms

The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has inaugurated the distribution of 10,000 free JAMB forms to Kano secondary school students.

During the flag-off of the distribution, the Governor, who was represented by the state’s Commissioner of Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, also used the opportunity to inaugurate the training of the 10,000 beneficiaries on the use of computer-based tests at various designated centers across Kano State.

On his part, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Education, Alhaji Tajuddin Gambo, said the Governor has promised to provide transport for the beneficiaries throughout the training session and urged them to ensure they pass the examination.

He said the government is willing to select the best schools for the beneficiaries if they pass the examinations.

One of the beneficiaries of the 10,000 free JAMB forms, Fatima Mukhtar Umar, expressed gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for issuing the free JAMB forms and promised not to disappoint.

In a statement by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, it was noted that the Governor used the opportunity to elaborate on the feats achieved by his government in developing the education sector in the last 22 months. These include the re-introduction of foreign and domestic scholarships, re-opening of 21 skills acquisition institutes, general renovation of primary and secondary schools, construction of new classrooms, provision of classroom furniture and writing materials, and the distribution of free uniforms to primary school pupils.

Other achievements, according to the Governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, include the reduction of 50% of registration fees in state-owned tertiary institutions, cash conditional transfers to support girl-child education, and the settlement of registration fees for NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS, to mention but a few.

Ibrahim Adam said Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf urged all the beneficiary students to make the best use of the opportunity and strive for excellence in their academic pursuits, saying that the future belongs to those who work tirelessly to turn dreams into realities.

WAEC unveils portal for past WASSCE questions

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has announced four significant innovations for the upcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE. One of such is a portal to access past questions.

The notable change introduces a unique question set for each candidate, alongside a transition to a computer-based examination format.

Dr. Amos Dangut, the Nigeria National Office Head of WAEC, expressed enthusiasm about these innovations, stating, “In our continuous effort to enhance the educational experience and improve student outcomes, WAEC is excited to announce the introduction of an innovative e-learning portal and an e-study portal, along with the availability of past examination questions.”

One of the key innovations includes the addition of past questions, which will now be accessible online.

This resource is designed to help candidates prepare effectively by familiarizing them with the exam format and question styles.

“By practicing with these questions, candidates can identify their strengths and areas that require improvement, leading to better performance in the examination,” Dr. Dangut explained.

The E-Learning Portal is another significant development. This platform will offer a comprehensive suite of educational materials, including video tutorials and interactive lessons tailored to the WASSCE curriculum. “By leveraging technology, we aim to create an engaging learning environment that encourages self-paced study, ultimately enhancing the academic readiness of our candidates,” he added.

Additionally, the newly introduced E-Study Portal will serve as a centralized hub for essential study resources, including study guides and revision tips. It will also facilitate collaboration among students through discussion forums.

“This will allow them to engage with peers and educators for a more enriched learning experience,” Dr. Dangut noted.

Further highlighting WAEC’s commitment to improving the examination process, several auxiliary initiatives have been introduced. The incorporation of the National Identification Number, NIN into the registration process, increased female participation, and the enlistment of approximately 26,000 practicing senior secondary school teachers as supervisors demonstrate WAEC’s emphasis on secure and effective examination administration.

Dr. Dangut commented on these efforts, saying, “These initiatives align with WAEC’s commitment to improving educational outcomes and providing candidates with the tools they need to succeed.”

With the examination period extended to eight weeks, candidates will have better access and scheduling flexibility.

Moreover, WAEC has partnered with the Nigeria Police Force and state governments to bolster security measures during examinations.

“Our goal is to reinforce the integrity of the assessment process,” Dr. Dangut added, highlighting ongoing awareness campaigns that educate candidates about the consequences of examination malpractice.

The 2025 WASSCE will cover a diverse array of subjects, with candidates being examined in 74 different areas, allowing for comprehensive assessment across various fields of study.

“By integrating technology into our examination process, we can better support our students in their academic journeys and uphold the integrity of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination,” concluded Dr. Dangut.

2025 UTME: JAMB directs candidates to print notification slips; exam commences Thursday

The 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, is now set to commence on Thursday, April 24, instead of the previously scheduled date of Friday.

JAMB explained in a statement on Saturday ,through its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, that the “adjustment has been made to accommodate essential commitments by the Board and its partner agencies.”

“In preparation for the examination, prospective candidates can now print their notification slips, which contain vital information regarding their exam details,”it directed.

According to the board, the notification slip contains Examination date;Venue (centre);Time and other essential details necessary for successfully sitting for the examination

“Candidates are encouraged to print their Notification Slips starting today, Saturday, April 19, 2025. This will provide ample time for logistical arrangements to access their assigned centres within the chosen examination towns,”it said.

JAMB strongly advised that candidates print their slips and familiarize themselves with their examination centres at least one or two days before the examination date.

“This preparation will help ensure a smooth experience on exam day,’it said.

On examination schedule, JAMB reiterated that the 2025 UTME will begin on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

” Candidates are advised to print their Examination Notification Slips at least a day before the exam to confirm their examination dates and locations, making it easier to access their centres on the day of the examination.

Please note that candidates will be assigned to centres within their chosen examination towns; no candidate will be placed in a centre outside their selected town,” it added.
