2027 Election: Changing Tinubu/Shettima Ticket Will Be APC’s Biggest Mistake — Prof Yerima

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Haruna Yerima, has warned that any attempt to alter the Tinubu/Shettima presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election could spell serious trouble for the ruling party.

Yerima said calls from some quarters to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima are misguided and politically dangerous, stressing that such a move could weaken party unity and hurt APC’s electoral chances nationwide.

According to him, the Tinubu–Shettima ticket that secured victory in the 2023 presidential election remains solid and balanced, adding that the vice president has shown loyalty, competence, and intellectual depth since assuming office. He warned that reopening debates over the ticket could revive old internal divisions within the APC.

The professor noted that many of those pushing for changes were among critics of the Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023, arguing that history has already proven the strategy effective at the polls. He cautioned APC leaders against listening to what he described as “self-serving political interests.”

Yerima’s comments align with similar warnings from APC youth groups and northern stakeholders, who have cautioned that dropping Shettima could cost the party crucial support, particularly in the North-East region, where the vice president commands strong political influence.

Amid rising speculation about the 2027 presidential race, analysts say debates over the ticket highlight early power plays within the APC. However, party insiders insist that maintaining the current ticket would help preserve stability and allow the administration to focus on governance rather than internal politics.

As preparations for 2027 gradually take shape, pressure continues to mount on the APC leadership to prioritise party cohesion, regional balance, and electoral strategy over premature political calculations.
