Kano Politics Heats Up as Ganduje Returns Ahead of Gov. Yusuf’s APC Defection

Former APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has returned to Nigeria from London amid growing political activities surrounding the anticipated defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ganduje arrived in the country after attending a family engagement in the United Kingdom and is expected to play a key role in ongoing APC consultations and strategic meetings ahead of the governor’s formal move. His return has further fuelled political speculations in Kano State, where preparations are reportedly underway to receive Governor Yusuf into the ruling party.

Reports indicate that APC flags and banners have been mounted at the Kano Government House, signalling an imminent defection ceremony. Governor Yusuf, who was elected on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has faced months of political pressure following internal party crises and governance challenges.

APC leaders argue that Yusuf’s defection would strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government, improve access to federal projects, and stabilise Kano’s political environment. Party insiders say several state lawmakers, local government chairmen, and political stakeholders are expected to defect alongside the governor.

However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures, who accuse the governor of betraying the mandate of NNPP supporters. Some political analysts have also warned that Yusuf may face internal competition and nomination battles within the APC ahead of the 2027 general election.

The unfolding developments in Kano are seen as part of a wider political realignment ahead of 2027, with the APC intensifying efforts to consolidate power in strategic northern states while opposition parties struggle to retain their bases.
