2027 Elections: APC Insists No Automatic Tickets for Defecting Governors
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly ruled out the granting of automatic tickets to defecting governors and other political heavyweights ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that all aspirants must emerge through competitive party primaries.
Senior party officials said the APC remains committed to internal democracy, making it clear that joining the ruling party does not guarantee a free pass to governorship or other elective tickets in 2027. According to the party leadership, defectors will be required to compete alongside existing members in line with the APC constitution.
The clarification comes amid growing political realignments, with reports linking some sitting governors to possible defections to the APC. In particular, speculation around Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other opposition governors seeking assurances over their political future has fueled debates within party circles.

APC leaders have dismissed claims of secret arrangements or pre-negotiated tickets, warning that such practices could undermine party unity and alienate long-standing members. Party stakeholders argue that automatic tickets could spark internal crises, especially in states where loyal APC members have been building structures ahead of the 2027 polls.
Political analysts say the party’s position signals an effort to balance the attraction of influential defectors with the need to protect grassroots participation and credibility in the nomination process. The stance also aligns with broader calls for transparent and credible primaries as Nigeria gradually moves into full electioneering mode.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, defections are expected to intensify across party lines. However, the APC’s latest position suggests that political ambition alone will not override party rules, setting the stage for potentially fierce contests within the ruling party nationwide.
