2027 Elections: Kwankwaso Sets Condition for Defection, Demands Presidential or VP Ticket
As political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, a national leader of a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he will only defect to a political party willing to offer him either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
Kwankwaso, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the NNPP platform, made the position clear amid growing speculation over his next political move and talks linking him to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other emerging coalitions.
Although the former Kano State governor held meetings with President Bola Tinubu shortly after the president’s inauguration in 2023, those engagements did not result in any formal appointment or political agreement. Since then, Kwankwaso has signalled interest in securing a top national role as presidential primaries approach.

However, the prospect of Kwankwaso emerging as a vice-presidential candidate on the APC platform has been widely described as unlikely, given his limited involvement in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have reportedly gained significant influence.
Both Atiku and Obi are seen as leading contenders in discussions within the ADC, with reports suggesting efforts to revive their 2019 Atiku-Obi joint ticket, which was previously contested under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku joined the ADC after leaving the PDP, while Obi defected from the Labour Party, the platform on which he ran in the 2023 election.
Speaking in Kano, Kwankwaso confirmed ongoing consultations at the national level but insisted that any political alignment must meet his stated condition.
“At the national level, we are looking for a political party to align with,” he said. “But it must be one that will offer me either the presidential ticket or the vice-presidential slot.”
He also dismissed speculation that Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was planning to defect from the NNPP to the APC, describing the reports as baseless.
“That is nothing but a dream,” Kwankwaso said.
