Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has accused Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, of plotting to destabilise the state through the recruitment of political thugs, the importation of foreign mercenaries, and clandestine arms trafficking.

Malami, who now leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi, made the claims in a petition addressed to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Comptrollers-General of Immigration and Civil Defence Corps.

Dated September 10, 2025, the petition alleged that the governor and his associates were working with mercenaries from the neighbouring Niger Republic, arming them through illegal channels and deploying them to intimidate citizens, silence opposition voices, and undermine peace in the state.

The former minister said the threats were credible, citing what he described as an attack on himself and his allies by armed thugs on September 1, 2025. According to him, the attackers operated “without fear of law enforcement,” a development he linked to the alleged collusion of the state government with violent groups.

Malami also accused Governor Idris of having covert links with the terrorist network Lakurawa, describing the situation as “a national security emergency” that goes beyond local politics and threatens Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal stability.

He called on security chiefs to take urgent action by securing border communities, tightening arms control, coordinating inter-agency intelligence, and investigating the alleged collaboration between state officials and terrorist elements.

The statement by his media aide, Mohammed Bello Doka, confirmed that copies of the petition had been forwarded to the DSS, Police, Immigration, and Civil Defence.
