21-day curfew declared in Oyo for Alaafin coronation

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has declared a 21-day curfew in Oyo town, Oyo State, as part of the traditional rites leading up to his coronation.

In a statement released by the monarch’s office on Friday, it was announced that the “Oro Ipebi” rites began on the night of Friday, March 7, and will conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

The statement outlined that movement within the town would be restricted from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily throughout the duration of the rites.

“The Aláàfin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of ÒRÒ ÌPẸBÍ, the mandatory rites for His Imperial Majesty before his ascension to the revered throne of the Aláàfin.

“The rites will commence from Friday, 7th March, to Saturday, 29th March 2025. Throughout this period, a curfew shall be imposed, as is customary, from 8 PM to 6 AM daily across Oyo township.

“This means movement will not be permitted during the curfew, and anyone who contravenes this order shall be arrested and detained until 7 AM the following day,” the statement read.

The palace emphasized the significance of the rites, underscoring their sacred place in the transition of power:

“It is pertinent to state that ORO ÌPẸBÍ, which requires the incoming Aláàfin to go into absolute seclusion for its duration, is sacrosanct for the ascending Ikú-Bàbá-Yèyé and must be respected by all and sundry.”

Following the completion of the rites, Oba Owoade’s coronation is set for Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier presented the staff and certificate of office to Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade, officially recognizing him as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The event, held at the Government House in Agodi, Ibadan, marked a significant chapter in the kingdom’s history.

During the presentation, Governor Makinde highlighted the Alaafin’s role as a unifying figure and custodian of tradition:

“I believe the new Alaafin will lead with wisdom, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the unity and development of the Oyo Kingdom,” the governor said.

In his speech, Oba Owoade expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Oyo for their support, pledging to prioritize the kingdom’s welfare and progress.

Oba Owoade succeeds Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who reigned for 51 years until his passing in 2022, leaving behind a lasting legacy of influence and leadership.

The new king’s selection was made by the Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers, and received Governor Makinde’s approval following consultations and traditional divinations.
