27-year-old Anambra man attempts suicide over N1.2m debt
The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a man from an attempted suicide in Umunnachi community, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
Alozie John, a 27-year-old livestock dealer from Isielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, reportedly tried to take his own life due to overwhelming debt. He allegedly owed his supplier N1.2 million for livestock products, which drove him to desperation.
In a statement on Saturday, Anambra State Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that John’s life was saved after officers intercepted his WhatsApp conversation.

“On 23/8/2024, Anambra police rescued a young man who attempted to take his own life. He was debriefed, given medical assistance, and is now in safe custody under monitoring,” Ikenga said.
Ikenga added that John had sent a distressing WhatsApp message to the police, confessing that he had ingested poison in hopes of ending his life due to his financial struggles. Despite consuming the harmful substance, he did not feel immediate effects.
The police contacted John’s mother, who is now assisting in evaluating him and arranging his transfer to a better facility for further care.
