6 Labour Party lawmakers defect to PDP
Six Labour Party (LP) members of the Enugu State House of Assembly have officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
They made their defection known on Thursday in Enugu in a letter read by the Speaker, Chief Uche Ugwu, during plenary.
The defectors include the Majority Leader, Mr Johnson Ani (Enugu North); the Chief Whip, Mr Ejike Eze, (Igbo-Eze North 1); and the Deputy Chief Whip, Ms Princess Ugwu (Enugu South Rural).
Others are Mr Pius Ezugwu (Nsukka East); Mr Williams Amuka (Igbo-Etiti West); and Mr Osita Eze (Oji River).
The defectors, in the letters, said their defection was as a result of the existence of irreconcilable division, incessant crisis within the labour party at the national level and across all the state chapters.
They regretted that the party had evolved into perpetual discord with various factions embroiled in legal battles, which undermine its ability to effectively serve the interest of the people.

According to them, the Labour Party, once considered a beacon of hope for progressive ideas, have regrettably become synonymous with internal squabbles, thereby reducing its capacity to fulfil the aspirations of electorates.
They cited the cases of Mr Julius Abure and Mr Limido Apapa factions as well as the national treasurer as some of the divisions within the party.
They expressed the hope that the PDP would give them the platform to continue to serve the interests of their people and thanked the leaderships of Labour Party for their supports.
The defectors also acknowledge that the letters were sent to the office of the Speaker by themselves, adding that they would work wholeheartedly for the progress of their new party in Enugu State.
In his remark, the Speaker welcomed the defectors into the PDP and promised that they would be carried along in the legislative activities of the House.
With the defection, the PDP now had the majority in the House with 17 members while LP had only six members.

Atiku Denies Fayoseās Claims About 2027 Vice-Presidential Talks With Makinde
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly refuted claims by former Ekiti State governor Peter Ayodele Fayose alleging that Governor Seyi Makinde had agreed to run as his vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Fayose as a āserial political gossipā and dismissed the report as a āreckless and malicious fabricationā consisting of ābeer parlour tales of infamy.ā
Fayose had alleged that Makinde agreed to the vice-presidential slot and pledged ā¦10 billion in contributions, a claim Atiku denied entirely. Shaibu said the account was not insider information but āinsider fiction, manufactured to mislead, distract and provoke.ā

āThere were no negotiations over vice-presidential tickets. There were no discussions about ā¦10 billion contributions. There were no zoning manipulations. There were no delegate-delivery guarantees. And there is certainly no clandestine āDubai meetingā on any such agenda,ā the statement read.
Atikuās office emphasized that his political engagements are broad-based, principled, and national in scope, and not transactional or clandestine, as alleged. The statement further warned the public against giving credibility to reports from individuals who āattempt to manufacture relevance by inventing tales around serious national figures.ā
The former vice president also clarified that during his recent visit to the residence of former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida, no discussions about vice-presidential arrangements took place.
Shaibu urged Nigerians to treat the publication with contempt, stressing that āfalsehood may trend for a moment, but it collapses under the weight of truth.ā
Atiku remains focused on principled engagement and building coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections, rejecting backroom political theatrics as āmischievously and irresponsibly portrayed.ā

The buses were handed over to CityBoyMedia, an affiliate of the City Boy Movement, a youth-driven grassroots support platform actively engaging communities in the Southeast and beyond to strengthen Tinubuās re-election campaign.

Obi Cubana, who has previously been prominent in civic engagement and social advocacy, signalled stronger political alignment with the Tinubu-led administration. In recent events, including hosting Seyi Tinubu, the Presidentās son, in Abuja, Cubana reaffirmed his commitment to youth mobilisation and inclusive political participation through the City Boy Movement.
Also present at the event was social media personality Cubana Chief Priest, who expressed support for the administration and reiterated his opposition to former presidential candidate Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The donations coincide with a wider surge in pro-Tinubu mobilisation activities nationwide, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and allied groups intensify efforts to consolidate support and ensure a strong grassroots presence. Jakandeās servant-leadership mindset remains relevant ā Olurode
Jakandeās servant-leadership mindset remains relevant ā Olurode
LAGOS ā A retired Professor of Sociology at the University of Lagos, Lai Olurode, has described the late first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, as a symbol of ethical and people-centred leadership, saying his āservant mindsetā continues to offer lessons for todayās political class.
Olurode spoke in Lagos on February 11, 2026, at a commemorative event marking the fifth anniversary of Jakandeās passing, where he delivered a tribute titled āJakandeās Servant Mindsets Remain Evergreen.ā
Reflecting on Jakandeās legacy, Olurode said the late governorās decisions were largely driven by public good rather than personal gain.
āAn analysis of Jakandeās actions⦠reveals that his major actions werenāt self-interest driven but motivated by a consuming concern for the enhancement of public goods,ā he said.
He noted that Jakandeās tenure expanded access to education, healthcare, roads and employment, with benefits reaching ordinary citizens rather than a narrow political circle.
According to him, the former governor demystified governance by taking it to the grassroots and maintaining close contact with the masses.
Olurode also recalled the period following the 1983 military coup, when praise for Jakandeās achievements continued despite the prevailing political climate, citing an incident where a government official described the ousted governor as a āsuperstar.ā
Highlighting Jakandeās personal style, he said the late leader avoided flamboyance, cut the cost of governance and remained accessible even after leaving office.
āJakande shunned flamboyance and the wasteful paraphernalia which many Nigerian leaders artificially surround themselves with,ā Olurode added.
He urged contemporary leaders to embrace ethical values, inclusivity and accountability, noting that Jakandeās legacy endures decades after his single term in office.
The event also featured reflections on Jakandeās contributions to Lagos State and tributes to his family, including his wife, Alhaja Sikirat Abimbola, and their children.
