Passports: Nigerians in Diaspora petition Interior minister over printer crisis
Nigerians in the United States of America, under the aegis of the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians, OAN, have urged the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to address the passport printer crisis at the Nigerian Consulates in New York and Atlanta.
The group expressed disappointment that one year after it appealed to the minister to address the problem, there has not been an official response.
In a statement signed by its President, Olutomi Aregbesola, sent to Vanguard yesterday, the OAN said it was disheartening that inefficiency has come to define the passport processing system in the aforementioned consulates.
According to him, the absence of passport printers in New York and Atlanta has caused undue hardship for Nigerians, leaving many stranded without valid passports.

This, he added, has made it increasingly difficult for those wishing to travel for emergencies, work, or attending to other family commitments. The group noted that two passport printers are currently stationed in the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., one of which remains idle.
It alleged that the refusal to deploy the idle printer to New York or Atlanta stemmed from “unfounded concerns” expressed by the former Minister of Interior that such a move might create discontent among the missions.
Aregbesola said, “This reasoning defies logic and reflects a lack of informed and strategic decision-making,” OAN stated, pointing out that this inaction has led to unnecessary travel expenses for immigration officers, security risks, and delays in service delivery.“The New York Consulate serves the largest jurisdiction. in the United States with a high concentration of Nigerians, yet it lacks a passport printer. OAN called this situation unacceptable in 2025.”

The police have asked Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial district of Kogi State.
The State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye made this known on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.
According to the statement, the Kogi police boss said the rally is against the proclamation on ban on political gathering by the state government issued on Monday.
The statement said, “Following the intelligence report on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of Rally and procession by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command has called on the organisers of planned rally at Okene to cancel such event in the interest of the peace in Kogi State.

“The call for cancellation becomes necessary, noting that intelligence reveals that some hoodlums plan to hijack the process and cause disturbance of peace in the State. The Command cannot afford to jeopardize the existing peace the State is currently enjoying.
“In view of the security threat received on the planned rally, the Kogi State Police Command is therefore advising the organisers to cancel the event so as to avoid any breakdown of law and order in the State. As the Command will not hesitate to apply the full wrath of law on any one who causes disturbance of peace and order in the State.”
Despite the Monday proclamation by the state government banning political gathering or rallies, Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue with her “homecoming”, adding that she’s only coming to the state to celebrate Eid Fitr with her constituents.

Lightning strike kills herder, 12 cows in Kaduna
A tragic incident occurred in Southern Kaduna as a herder, identified as Ibrahim Likit, and at least 12 cows were struck dead by lightning.
The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Matuak Giwa, Bondon District, Moro’a Chiefdom, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the Village Head of Matuak Giwa, Simon Ayuba, the young herder was seeking shelter from the rain alongside his cattle when a thunderstrike hit, killing them instantly.
“The herder, along with 12 cows, d!ed on the spot. It was a tragic occurrence that has left the community in shock,” Ayuba said.

Confirming the incident, Mallam Tanko Isiyaka, the Ardo of Bondon District, disclosed that the deceased herder hailed from Bauchi State.
He expressed sadness over the incident and called for prayers and support for the bereaved family as the victim was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
The occurrence has since stirred grief and sympathy among residents of the area.

A woman, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Usman, her husband, Alhaji Muhammad Usman, alongside their four other relations reportedly lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident which occurred at Ahoko bridge, along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.
A witness said the incident occurred around 12:34 pm on Sunday, the eidfitr day.
He said the couple and the four others left Toto town in Nasarawa State in an unmarked Honda car to attend a burial of one of their relatives at Kotonkarfe when the accident happened.
He said the car veered off the road and somersaulted into a ditch after a trailer hit the vehicle from behind, adding that all the six occupants died on the spot.
Our reporter learnt that Muhammed Usman was the chairmanship aspirant in the November, 2024, Toto LGA election in the area.
However, the remains of the deceased were evacuated into an ambulance to Toto for burial.
