BREAKING: Olu Jacobs Dies at 84, Atiku Mourns Cultural Icon
Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar describing the late Nollywood icon as “an institution” and “a cultural icon” whose contribution helped shape Nigeria’s creative industry.
Jacobs’ death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, who described the celebrated actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and called on bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” Olusoji said in the announcement.
Reacting to the death, Atiku said Nigeria had lost far more than a great actor, describing Jacobs as “an institution, a cultural icon and one of the finest ambassadors of our creative spirit.”
The former vice president said Jacobs had become part of the collective memory of generations of Nigerians through his distinctive voice, commanding performances and decades of dedication to his craft.
According to Atiku, Jacobs was already making his mark internationally before Nollywood emerged as a global phenomenon, and his career helped lay foundations for the Nigerian film industry while inspiring younger generations of actors.
“The curtain may have fallen on an extraordinary life, but the characters he gave us, the standards he set and the generations he inspired will continue to speak for him,” Atiku said.
He expressed condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and the wider Jacobs family, as well as members of Nollywood and the African creative community.
Atiku said Jacobs “gave Nigeria his talent, his voice and a lifetime of excellence,” adding that the country would remember him with pride, affection and gratitude.
Jacobs, whose career spanned theatre, British television, international film and Nollywood, was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He became one of Nigeria’s most recognisable screen and stage actors and was associated with the development of the Nigerian film industry.
His death marks the end of a career spanning more than five decades and has already triggered tributes from political figures, actors and other members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

We Learnt of His Death on Instagram’: Toluwanisings’ Family Demands Answers Over Mysterious Circumstances
‘We Learnt of His Death on Instagram’: Toluwanisings’ Family Demands Answers Over Mysterious Circumstances
A family dispute has erupted following the death of a young man identified as Sodiq, popularly known as Toluwanisings, after his relatives raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding his death and how they were informed of the tragedy.
The deceased’s family, through a statement by a man who identified himself as the younger brother of Sodiq’s father, accused members of his wife’s household of failing to notify his biological family about his death before information about the incident surfaced on social media.
The family representative said five relatives travelled to the deceased’s residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, following the news of his death, expecting to meet a grieving household.
However, he claimed that what they encountered at the residence left them deeply disturbed.
According to his account, there was no visible atmosphere of mourning, as people were allegedly moving around with food and takeaways while others watched television.
He said he personally demanded that the television be switched off, questioning what he described as a lack of respect for the deceased.
The family representative further alleged that when he asked Sodiq’s wife whether she recognised the five people who had visited, she said she knew only two of them.
He described the response as another source of concern, considering that the visitors were relatives sent by the deceased’s family.
The controversy reportedly intensified when the relatives requested that the deceased’s personal assistant (PA) take them to the mortuary where his body had been embalmed.
According to the uncle, they initially encountered resistance, alleging that attempts were made to prevent them from accessing the deceased’s remains.
He said he eventually contacted the family elders who had sent them to report the development and seek further instructions, insisting that their mandate was to see the body of their deceased son.
The uncle claimed that the PA eventually agreed to take them to the mortuary after it became apparent that the family would not abandon its demand.
He described seeing Sodiq’s lifeless body as an emotionally devastating experience, saying the reality of his death finally became clear to the visiting relatives.
The family representative also disclosed that he confronted the deceased’s wife with questions about her relationship with Sodiq’s biological father.
He claimed that she confirmed having met her father-in-law but could not explain why she had allegedly failed to check on him.
According to the statement, she also said she did not know where her father-in-law lived.
The uncle further questioned why the deceased’s biological family allegedly learnt about his death through Instagram rather than receiving a direct telephone call from his wife.
He described the response to the question as silence.
The family representative also said he spoke with the wife’s mother, who reportedly disclosed that they were from Iwo, Osun State.
He alleged that the wife’s mother and her siblings were living in the same house with Sodiq, yet his biological father was not informed about his son’s death before the information became public.
The uncle further accused members of the household of attempting to secretly record the family during their visit.
He said the development added to the family’s concerns, particularly as they were seeking explanations about the circumstances surrounding the death of their son and brother.
Describing the experience as painful and unacceptable, he insisted that the family would not remain silent until the issues surrounding the incident were addressed.
He called for justice, transparency and respect for the deceased, stressing that no family should have to discover the death of its son through social media when close relatives could have been contacted directly.
The statement ended with renewed calls for answers under the hashtags #JusticeForToluwanisings and #JusticeForSodiq.
As of the time of filing this report, the allegations made by the deceased’s relatives had not been independently verified. The account of the wife and other members of her household was also not contained in the statement.
The circumstances surrounding Sodiq’s death, including the events preceding it and the reason his biological family allegedly did not receive prompt notification, remain issues requiring clarification.
Newstrends.ng will continue to follow developments surrounding the controversy and any response from the deceased’s wife, her family or relevant authorities.

Emeka Ike Loses ₦10bn Privacy Suit Against Wike’s Aide, INEC
A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a ₦10 billion lawsuit filed by Nollywood actor Emeka Ike against Lere Olayinka, an aide to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the alleged publication of his voter registration details on social media.
Justice Salim Ibrahim delivered the judgment on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after considering objections raised by the respondents and the actor’s claims over the alleged violation of his right to privacy and protection of personal data.
Ike had approached the court seeking ₦10 billion in damages, arguing that Olayinka violated his fundamental rights by publishing information about his transfer of voter registration from Imo State to the Federal Capital Territory on his X account in May.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1272/2026, was filed through his lawyer, L.T. Adeh. The actor asked the court to declare that the publication of his voter registration information without his consent violated Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution, Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and relevant provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
He also sought an order directing Olayinka to delete the disputed post and issue a written apology over the alleged infringement of his rights.
Ike further argued that INEC had a statutory responsibility to safeguard voters’ personal information against unauthorised access and disclosure. He maintained that the commission’s statement issued on June 2 in response to the controversy amounted to an admission of liability.

However, INEC denied violating its obligation to protect voters’ information. The commission argued that the material in question was neither classified nor confidential and maintained that relevant electoral laws permitted certain voter information to be made available to the public.
INEC also denied that the disputed material originated from a breach of its secured database or that its systems had been unlawfully accessed.
Olayinka, in his defence, argued that the information he published contained Ike’s name and passport photograph, which he claimed were already in the public domain. He denied obtaining the information unlawfully or breaching any duty of confidentiality.
The aide also maintained that the publication was intended to draw attention to Ike’s transfer of voter registration and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act. He urged the court to dismiss the case, describing the actor’s damages claim as unjustified.
The dispute emerged after Ike indicated interest in contesting the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general election on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He subsequently lost the party’s primary election.
The dismissal represents a legal setback for the actor, who had sought substantial compensation over the publication of his voter registration details.
The case has also drawn attention to questions surrounding the handling of voters’ personal information, the limits of public disclosure and the responsibilities of electoral institutions in protecting citizens’ data.

Tope Alabi Threatens Pastor With Lawsuit Over Toluwanisings’ Death Claims
Popular Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist Tope Alabi has threatened legal action against individuals spreading what she describes as false and defamatory statements about her, warning that people who repost or share such content could also face legal consequences.
The singer’s warning comes amid online controversy over allegations linking her and other gospel ministers to the death of fellow gospel singer Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings.
Alabi’s solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, issued a public notice dated October 23, 2026, which the singer shared on her Instagram page.
In the notice, the lawyers said they had been instructed to protect their client’s reputation against statements they described as false, misleading and injurious, allegedly being circulated through social media, videos, audio recordings, broadcasts and other platforms.
The legal team noted that Alabi had spent almost 30 years building her personal, professional and spiritual reputation, describing it as an important asset protected by law.
The lawyers warned that potential liability could extend beyond the original author of an allegedly defamatory statement to anyone who republishes, reposts, forwards or otherwise amplifies it, depending on the circumstances and any applicable legal defences.

They also cautioned social media users against assuming that anonymous or pseudonymous accounts would protect them from legal action.
According to the notice, Alabi reserved the right to seek court orders, where legally permissible, to identify individuals responsible for the publications through social media platforms, website hosts and other relevant service providers.
The lawyers directed anyone who had already published the allegedly defamatory material to remove it immediately and refrain from further publication. They added, however, that deleting a post would not automatically eliminate potential liability for its earlier publication.
The notice further stated that Alabi had authorised the law firm to institute proceedings against individuals whose conduct gave rise to actionable claims without further notice.
Among the remedies the singer could seek are damages, injunctions restraining further publication, court-ordered retractions, public apologies and legal costs.
However, the lawyers clarified that the notice was not intended to prevent legitimate criticism or restrict freedom of expression.
They said truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest and the lawful exercise of freedom of expression remained outside the notice’s intended scope.
In a subsequent development reported on October 24, Alabi’s lawyers threatened legal action against a Canada-based pastor identified as Tayo Kumuyi, also known as Pastor Tayo Ministries, over alleged social media publications linking the singer to Toluwanisings’ death and claims involving other gospel ministers.
According to reports, the solicitors issued a cease-and-desist letter demanding the removal of the disputed publications, a retraction and a public apology within 24 hours.
The lawyers also expressed concern over what they described as repeated allegations and a subsequent social media post directed at their client.
The allegations against Alabi have not been established as facts, and the legal notice represents her side of the dispute. The specific claims and the circumstances surrounding the gospel singer’s death require independent verification.
The development highlights the potential legal consequences of publishing and circulating serious allegations about individuals online, particularly when such claims concern criminal conduct and could damage their reputations.
As of the latest reports, it was not clear whether Alabi had filed a lawsuit in court over the publications.
