Osimhen Brace Sinks Fenerbahce as Galatasaray Win Istanbul Derby

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored twice in the first half to inspire Galatasaray to a 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Fenerbahce in Monday’s Turkish Super Lig derby at RAMS Park in Istanbul.

The Nigerian forward struck in the 29th and 44th minutes to give the reigning champions a two-goal cushion before Fenerbahce fought back in the second half through Irfan Can Kahveci.

Osimhen opened the scoring in the 29th minute after combining with Baris Alper Yilmaz before driving into the penalty area and firing past goalkeeper Ederson.

The goal gave Galatasaray the breakthrough in a fiercely contested encounter between two of Turkish football’s biggest clubs.

The 27-year-old striker doubled the hosts’ advantage just before half-time, redirecting Davinson Sanchez’s effort into the net with a header in the 44th minute.

Galatasaray went into the break leading 2-0 after dominating much of the first half, while Fenerbahce struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.

The visitors returned with greater urgency after the interval and reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute. Kahveci produced an acrobatic overhead kick after receiving a pass from Oguz Aydin, giving Fenerbahce renewed hope of salvaging a result.

Fenerbahce pushed for an equaliser as the match approached its closing stages, but Galatasaray held firm to secure all three points.

The result strengthened Galatasaray’s position in the Turkish Super Lig title race, taking the club back to the top of the standings with 22 points from nine matches. Fenerbahce remained on 16 points, dropping to fifth place.

Osimhen’s brace further underlined his importance to Galatasaray’s attack as the Nigerian international continued to deliver in high-profile matches.

The victory also extended Galatasaray’s impressive recent record against their Istanbul rivals, giving the home side bragging rights in one of Turkish football’s most closely followed fixtures.

For Osimhen, the performance was another significant contribution to Galatasaray’s campaign, with his two first-half goals ultimately proving decisive despite Fenerbahce’s second-half response.

Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal has won the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, extending his remarkable run of success in the category to three consecutive years.

The 19-year-old received the honour at the ceremony held at the London Palladium in England on Monday, October 26, 2026. The award recognises his outstanding performances and continued development among the world’s most promising footballers.

Yamal, who plays for Barcelona and the Spanish national team, was also among the contenders for the main Men’s Ballon d’Or award after another impressive campaign.

However, the top individual prize went to Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane, who finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Yamal in the final rankings.

Yamal finished third in the men’s Ballon d’Or standings, underlining his position among the leading players in world football despite his young age.

According to UEFA’s announcement of the winners, Yamal was named Men’s Young Talent of the Year, while Kane claimed the main award. The ceremony marked the first time the Ballon d’Or awards were held in London.

Reacting to his latest young-player accolade, Yamal reportedly suggested that the award could have gone to his Barcelona and Spain teammate Pau Cubarsí, highlighting the strength of young talent within the club’s squad.

Yamal’s latest achievement further strengthens his growing reputation in European football, where his attacking ability, creativity and performances for Barcelona and Spain have attracted considerable attention.

The 2026 ceremony also saw Spain’s Vicky López win the women’s young talent award, while other honours recognised achievements by players, coaches and clubs across men’s and women’s football.

The result places Yamal among the standout young talents of his generation, as he continues to compete for major individual honours alongside established stars.

KANE ENDS 25-YEAR WAIT! England Captain Wins 2026 Ballon d’Or After Stunning 73-Goal Season

Bayern Munich striker beats Mbappe, Yamal to prestigious award as organisers’ embarrassing online blunder sparks pre-ceremony confusion

LONDON, United Kingdom — England captain Harry Kane has ended his country’s 25-year wait for football’s most prestigious individual honour after winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to claim the coveted award.

The Bayern Munich striker was crowned the world’s best men’s footballer at a ceremony in London on Monday, October 26, following a remarkable season in which he scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for the German giants across all competitions.

Kane’s overall tally rose to 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/2026 campaign, underlining his extraordinary consistency in front of goal and strengthening his claim to the individual prize.

The 33-year-old beat Real Madrid’s French forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal to the award, completing a remarkable chapter in a career defined by goalscoring excellence and years of waiting for major honours.

According to Reuters and Sky Sports, Kane’s triumph represents a historic breakthrough for English football, which had not produced a men’s Ballon d’Or winner since Owen’s victory a quarter of a century ago.

From trophy drought to football’s biggest individual prize

Kane’s achievement carries added significance because of the long journey that preceded it.

For years, the England captain was celebrated as one of Europe’s most prolific strikers, particularly during his time at Tottenham Hotspur. However, major team trophies remained elusive, despite his impressive individual statistics.

His move to Bayern Munich in 2023 marked a significant turning point, giving him the opportunity to compete for major domestic and European honours with one of Germany’s most successful clubs.

During the 2025/2026 season, Kane delivered an outstanding goalscoring campaign that helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title and the German domestic cup.

His performances also extended to the international stage, where he scored six goals for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the national team advanced to the semi-finals.

The combination of individual brilliance, team success and consistency across competitions helped propel him to the summit of world football.

Kane had never previously finished higher than 10th in the Ballon d’Or rankings, making his eventual victory an especially striking career milestone.

‘Almost speechless’ Kane celebrates historic triumph

Reacting to the award, an emotional Kane expressed gratitude to the organisers and the journalists who voted for him.

“Wow, I’m almost speechless,” he said during his acceptance speech, according to Sky Sports.

The England captain also described winning the award in London as particularly special, thanking those who supported his journey to the top.

His triumph places him among a distinguished group of English Ballon d’Or winners, including Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen.

The award, presented annually to recognise the world’s outstanding footballer, is determined through voting by an international panel of journalists.

Kane’s victory reflects not only his remarkable scoring figures but also his contribution to Bayern’s domestic success and England’s World Cup campaign.

Mbappe, Yamal miss out as Kane takes centre stage

Mbappe finished second in the men’s rankings, while Yamal secured third place.

The result denied the two highly rated forwards the opportunity to claim the award, despite their impressive performances for their respective clubs and national teams.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri finished fourth, while Argentina legend Lionel Messi, who plays for Inter Miami, occupied fifth place.

Yamal, however, did not leave the ceremony empty-handed, winning the award for the best young male talent, while Kane also collected the men’s striker award.

The rankings highlighted the depth of competition among the world’s leading footballers, with several established stars and emerging talents featuring prominently.

Ballon d’Or website blunder sparks confusion before ceremony

Kane’s triumph was preceded by an embarrassing communications error that threatened to overshadow the build-up to the awards ceremony.

Hours before the official announcement, the Ballon d’Or website published articles appearing to declare Kane, Mbappe and Yamal separate winners of the 2026 men’s award.

The publications quickly circulated online, triggering speculation and confusion among football fans who wondered whether the organisers had accidentally disclosed the result before the ceremony.

The articles were subsequently removed.

According to the Associated Press, France Football, the publication behind the award, explained that profiles prepared for nominees had inadvertently been published online.

The organisers stressed that the premature publication of the articles should not be interpreted as an indication of the final results or rankings.

The incident attracted considerable attention because the identity of the winner is traditionally kept secret until the official announcement.

Kane’s eventual victory was confirmed at the ceremony, settling the uncertainty generated by the online publications.

Alexia Putellas wins women’s award for third time

While Kane dominated the men’s category, Spain international Alexia Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time in her career.

The midfielder, who previously claimed the award in 2021 and 2022, strengthened her standing among the most decorated players in women’s football.

Other winners included Luis de la Fuente as men’s coach of the year, Pere Romeu as women’s coach of the year, Unai Simon as men’s goalkeeper of the year and Cata Coll as women’s goalkeeper of the year.

Paris Saint-Germain won the men’s club award, while Barcelona claimed the corresponding women’s honour.

Arsenal and England winger Bukayo Saka received the Socrates Award, which recognises humanitarian and social contributions.

A defining moment for English football

Kane’s Ballon d’Or victory represents more than personal recognition for a prolific striker. It also ends a lengthy wait for English football and provides a landmark moment in the career of a player who spent years chasing major honours.

His 73 goals across club and international football during the 2025/2026 campaign demonstrated the consistency and finishing ability that made him one of the season’s standout performers.

By overcoming competition from Mbappe, Yamal and other elite players, Kane has added football’s most prestigious individual award to a career already distinguished by remarkable scoring records.

For England, his achievement revives memories of Owen’s triumph in 2001 and restores the country’s presence at the very top of the Ballon d’Or honours list.

For Kane, it is the culmination of years of persistence, outstanding performances and a determination to translate individual excellence into lasting recognition.

Messi Makes History as Barcelona, Inter Miami Celebrate Asturias Award

Spanish giants Barcelona and Major League Soccer club Inter Miami have congratulated Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi after he received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, becoming the first individual footballer to win the prestigious honour.

Messi received the award from Princess Leonor of Spain during a ceremony at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo on Friday, October 23, 2026. The recognition celebrates his remarkable football career, sporting achievements and contributions to society beyond the pitch.

Barcelona, where Messi spent more than two decades of his career, praised their former captain for his exceptional talent, commitment to football and charitable work.

In a message shared on social media, the Spanish club described the award as richly deserved, highlighting the Argentine’s lasting impact both on and off the pitch.

Barcelona also reflected on Messi’s enduring connection with the club, noting that his successful career had become an inseparable part of its history and legacy.

The 38-year-old joined Barcelona’s youth academy at the age of 13 and went on to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, recording 672 goals and winning 35 trophies before leaving in 2021.

Inter Miami, where Messi currently serves as captain, also celebrated the achievement, describing it as recognition of his influence beyond football.

“Congratulations, captain, on receiving the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. Your talent makes history. Your values leave a mark that goes far beyond soccer,” the American club said in its congratulatory message.

The Princess of Asturias Foundation recognised Messi for his extraordinary sporting career, exceptional talent and continued charitable work to improve access to education and healthcare for disadvantaged children.

The award jury also highlighted his humility, consistency, respect for others and commitment to teamwork, describing qualities that have earned him admiration across the football world.

Messi expressed happiness at receiving the honour, explaining that it carried significance beyond his achievements on the pitch. Having lived in Spain for more than 20 years during his Barcelona career, he said he understood the importance of the recognition.

The Argentine’s trip to Oviedo was particularly emotional following the recent death of his father, Jorge Messi. Reports said his father had encouraged him to travel to Spain to receive the award, making the occasion even more meaningful to the football star.

The latest honour adds to Messi’s extraordinary collection of individual and team achievements, which includes eight Ballon d’Or awards and the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

His recognition also reinforces his standing as a global sporting figure whose influence extends beyond goals, trophies and individual records.
