Senate assigns forensic experts to trace crude oil theft

The Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft says it has engaged forensic experts to trace and provide information on crude oil theft in the country.

The committee Chairman, Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, disclosed this during a two-day public hearing on the Incessant and Nefarious Acts of Crude Oil Theft in the Niger Delta held at the Senate Wing, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Nwoko said the Ad-hoc Committee, since its inception had commenced work in earnest by engaging forensic experts to trace and provide information on crude oil theft from point of lifting to sales up to bank transactions. “This is truly yielding great results and the Ad-hoc Committee will in due time not hesitate to publish its findings. On this note, I wish to assure Nigerians of the Ad-hoc Committee’s commitment to this course as well as its readiness to finding a lasting solution to this nightmare facing our oil and gas industry.”

The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly noted that the hearing was a pivotal step in addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing “our nation—the rampant theft of crude oil through illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, and the systemic gaps in the regulation and surveillance of our petroleum resources.

“Nigeria loses billions of dollars annually to crude oil theft. This is severely undermining our economy, weakening the Naira, and depriving the nation of vital revenue needed for infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social development.”

Nwoko regretted “that the scale of this theft is staggering, with reports indicating losses of over 200,000 barrels per day – more than some OPEC member nations produce. This criminal enterprise fuels corruption, funds illegal activities, and devastates our environment through spills and pollution.  Nigeria’s survival depends on how we tackle this menace.

“We cannot continue to hemorrhage resources while our people suffer. This hearing must produce practical recommendations that will be swiftly implemented.”

The lawmaker assured that Senate and the National Assembly are committed to passing laws that will strengthen regulatory agencies (NUPRC, NEITI, NSA, etc.), enhance community engagement and alternative livelihoods for Niger Delta youth, improve inter-agency collaboration between the military, police, NSCDC, and private security firms, enforce transparency in crude oil lifting and metering processes.

“Let me remind us all that the time for rhetoric is over. The future of our economy and the well-being of generations unborn depend on the actions we take today. I urge every participant to contribute constructively, with patriotism and urgency.  Together, we can reclaim Nigeria’s stolen wealth, secure our energy infrastructure, and restore confidence in the petroleum sector.

He reminded participants that: “This public hearing is not just another talk shop. It is a decisive platform to: Uncover the root causes of crude oil theft, bunkering, and pipeline vandalism; Evaluate the effectiveness of existing surveillance, monitoring, and enforcement mechanisms; Identify regulatory and legislative gaps that enable these crimes to thrive; Engage stakeholders, security agencies, host communities, oil companies, regulators, and experts—to proffer actionable solutions; Strengthen legal frameworks to ensure stricter penalties and more efficient prosecution of offenders.

“We expect frank, evidence-based submissions from all stakeholders. This Ad-hoc Committee will not entertain blame games or excuses. We seek solutions, not just lamentations. Key questions we must answer include: Why has crude oil theft persisted despite numerous interventions?; What are the roles of international syndicates, local collaborators, and compromised officials?; How can technology (e.g., digital metering, drones, AI surveillance) enhance monitoring?; What legislative reforms are needed to deter offenders and protect national assets?”

Dismissed Soldier Soja Boi Dares Nigerian Army to Publish Payroll Over Pay, Welfare Claims

A dismissed Nigerian soldier, Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly known as Soja Boi, has challenged the Nigerian Army to release its payroll amid growing controversy over soldiers’ remuneration, allowances, and welfare. The former lance corporal made the call in a video posted on Tuesday, showing what he claims are bank transaction alerts reflecting his earnings while in service.

In the video, Olamilekan identified a payment of ₦112,061.59 as his monthly salary, alongside ₦20,000 described as a “grumbling allowance,” ₦45,000 operational allowance for deployment to active theatres like Maiduguri, and a ₦6,000 security allowance. He alleged that soldiers not on operations receive only their salary and the grumbling allowance, while operational allowances are conditional.

He also claimed that military personnel often pay out-of-pocket for helmets, boots, and protective jackets, stating: “Helmet, you go buy. Fragmentation jacket, you go buy them.” Olamilekan urged Nigerians to verify his claims with relatives serving in the Army, insisting his goal is not to discredit the institution but to present facts backed by evidence.

However, the Nigerian Army has rejected Olamilekan’s claims as false and misleading. Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, clarified that uniforms, kits, arms, and protective gear are supplied through official channels, and no soldier is deployed without adequate operational equipment. The Army said Olamilekan was dismissed for repeated indiscipline and violations of military social media policies, not for raising concerns about pay or welfare.

On remuneration, the Army emphasised that personnel receive structured monthly salaries and allowances, including operational, mission-specific, and uniform allowances paid directly into their accounts. Soldiers deployed to conflict zones such as Operation HADIN KAI receive additional benefits such as ration cash and habit allowances, alongside free feeding and protective gear.

The Army warned that spreading unverified information could undermine morale and national security, urging the public to rely only on official sources for military news. Despite the rebuttal, Olamilekan’s challenge has sparked debate online, with calls for greater transparency in military pay and welfare systems.

Police Debunk Viral Claim of 488 Boko Haram Arrests in Abia

The Abia State Police Command has dismissed viral reports claiming that 488 suspected Boko Haram terrorists were arrested in Abia State, describing the information as false, misleading, and capable of causing panic among residents.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, clarified that no such operation or mass arrest took place anywhere in the state, urging the public to disregard the widely circulated claim.

According to the Command, the report was deliberately fabricated to disturb public peace and create unnecessary fear, especially across communities in Abia State. Chinaka explained that the video accompanying the claim is not recent, noting that it is an old broadcast that has been circulating for over 11 years and has no connection to the current security situation in the state.

She stressed that there has been no infiltration or arrest of Boko Haram suspects in Abia, reaffirming that security agencies remain fully alert, proactive, and in control of the state’s security architecture. The Command also reassured residents that there is no imminent threat, encouraging them to go about their normal daily activities without fear.

The police further emphasized that the spread of such misinformation—particularly on social media—can undermine public confidence and disrupt peace, warning that individuals found sharing false security reports would be dealt with according to the law.

Quoting the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Danladi Isa, cautioned against the deliberate dissemination of fake news, stating that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted under relevant laws, including provisions of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime (Prohibition/Prevention) Act.

The Command also reiterated that while security agencies across Nigeria continue intelligence-led operations to tackle insurgency and other criminal activities, there has been no verified incident linking the activities of Boko Haram to Abia State in the manner reported.

Residents were therefore advised to rely only on credible news sources and official communication channels for accurate information, as authorities intensify efforts to curb misinformation and maintain public order.

The police assured that it remains committed to protecting lives and property, adding that any attempt to incite panic through false reports will attract serious legal consequences.

2026 NYSC Batch A Stream II: Registration, Swearing-In Dates Announced

The National Youth Service Corps has released the full timetable and key guidelines for the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II orientation course, confirming that the nationwide exercise will begin on April 22 across all orientation camps in Nigeria.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, said the three-week programme will be conducted simultaneously in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for eligible prospective corps members (PCMs).

The scheme disclosed that registration of prospective corps members will commence on April 22, 2026, and will run until midnight on April 24, 2026, stressing that the deadline is strict and no late entry into camp will be permitted. According to the NYSC, any PCM who fails to report within this period risks being deferred to another stream, making it crucial for candidates to adhere strictly to the approved timetable.

The NYSC further stated that the swearing-in ceremony will take place on April 24, 2026, marking the official commencement of full orientation activities nationwide. Following this, corps members will participate in a structured three-week programme designed to prepare them for national service, including drills, lectures, and social integration activities.

The orientation exercise is expected to end on May 12, 2026, after which participants will be deployed to their respective Places of Primary Assignment (PPA) across the country. This phase signals the transition from camp activities to practical service in various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

The scheme also reiterated that only graduates who have been properly mobilised and verified will be admitted into the orientation camps. Prospective corps members are therefore advised to ensure that all their records and documentation are complete and accurate before travelling.

In addition, the NYSC outlined mandatory requirements for camp registration, urging all PCMs to report with essential documents such as their call-up letter, original academic credentials or statement of result, a valid means of identification, a medical fitness certificate, and recent passport photographs. Failure to present any of these documents may result in denial of registration at the camp.

Emphasising safety, the NYSC issued a strong advisory against night travel, urging prospective corps members to prioritise their security while travelling to their assigned orientation camps. The scheme specifically advised that journeys should be broken once it is 6:00 p.m., with corps members encouraged to lodge in safe and secure locations such as hotels, police stations, or other approved places before continuing their journey the next day. The agency also recommended the use of reputable transport companies to minimise risks.

With thousands of Nigerian graduates expected to participate, the NYSC 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II orientation is set to be a major nationwide exercise, reinforcing the scheme’s role in national integration and youth development. All prospective corps members are therefore urged to stay informed, comply with official guidelines, and make adequate preparations ahead of the programme.
