Eid-el-Fitr: Lagos Police Deploy Tactical Teams, Boost Security Statewide

The Nigeria Police Force has rolled out comprehensive security measures across Lagos ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, assuring residents of a safe and peaceful festive period.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that the operation is in line with directives from senior police leadership, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh.

According to the command, the security deployment includes a combination of conventional officers, tactical squads, intelligence operatives, and marine police units to cover both land and waterways. The strategy is aimed at strengthening surveillance and preventing any security breaches before, during, and after the festivities.

The police also confirmed that intelligence gathering has been intensified to detect and neutralize potential threats early, with coordinated efforts across all formations in the state.

Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units have been instructed to increase patrols, particularly in densely populated communities and identified high-risk areas. Officers have also been directed to maintain professionalism while ensuring a strong visible presence across neighborhoods.

Traffic management is another key component of the security plan, with personnel deployed to major highways, inner roads, and congestion-prone locations to ease vehicular movement and prevent gridlock during the holiday period.

Security arrangements have been strengthened at key public locations, including Eid prayer grounds, mosques, markets, recreational centres, and other venues expected to attract large crowds during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly.

Lagos communities face 4-month blackout, power firm alerts

Thousands of residents and businesses in some communities in Lagos are set for a prolonged power outage as the power authorities begin a major overhaul of a critical electricity facility in the affected areas.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with Ikeja Electric, says it will commence rehabilitation works on the 132kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at the Amuwo Transmission Station of Lagos.

According to a statement released by Ikeja Electric on Wednesday, the exercise will kick off on March 19, 2026, and run through July 30, 2026 — a period of over four months.

The companies said the project was designed to upgrade aging infrastructure and improve the long-term stability of electricity supply across the affected communities. However, the short-term impact is expected to be significant.

Areas likely to bear the brunt are Old Ojo Road and Ijesha Express (served by the 11-Amuwo INJ-T1 feeder), Jakande 1 and 2 (11-Amuwo INJ-T2), as well as Amukoko and parts of Hongxing linked to the 33kV Amuwo TCN lines.

“Please be informed that rehabilitation and maintenance works on the 132kV GIS substation at the Amuwo Transmission Station will commence on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. and are expected to continue until Thursday, July 30, 2026.

“During this period, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Ikeja Electric will work collaboratively to minimise the impact of the project on customers served by the following feeders,” the statement read.

The utility firms appealed for patience, insisting the temporary hardship is necessary to deliver a more reliable and efficient electricity network in the long run.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the cyberbullying charges filed against former presidential candidate and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore by former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, citing lack of diligent prosecution by the police. The ruling marks a major victory for Sowore and is seen as a reinforcement of due process and the rule of law in Nigeria.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/23/2025, originated from complaints that Sowore used his verified X handle to publish statements against the then IGP, calling him “illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun.” Prosecutors alleged that the messages were false and intended to incite public disorder. Specific counts cited alleged violations of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, ETC) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024, including messages tagged to the verified Nigeria Police Force account and statements suggesting that Egbetokun would make the next #ENDSARS inevitable.

Sowore’s legal team, led by Marshall Abubakar, applied for dismissal on the grounds that the police had not actively pursued the case since Sowore’s arraignment in January 2025, and that the delay violated Section 351 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). During proceedings on Tuesday, the prosecution requested a short recess for its lead counsel to appear, but the defense opposed it, insisting that the prolonged inaction warranted outright dismissal.

Justice Musa Liman, in delivering the judgment, agreed with the defense, noting that the police failed to diligently prosecute the case, resulting in its dismissal. He formally struck out the charges, stating:

“The charge FHC/ABJ/CR/23/2025 is struck out and accordingly dismissed.”

Supporters of Sowore welcomed the ruling, highlighting concerns that cybercrime and defamation laws have occasionally been misapplied to target activists and limit freedom of expression in Nigeria.
