Nigerian woman using death threats to turn Nigerian girls into sex slaves arrested in Italy

Polizia di Stato, the Italian state police, has arrested an unnamed Nigerian woman for using ‘juju’ rituals and death threats to coerce girls into prostitution.

The police said that the suspect recruited young women in Nigeria then sent them to Italy for a prostitution career and a life of slavery.

“The policemen of the Mobile Teams of Syracuse and Foggia arrested a Nigerian woman accused of the crimes of human trafficking, enslavement, aggravated by having also acted to the detriment of minors, aiding illegal immigration, exploitation of prostitution as well as self-laundering of the proceeds of illegal activity,” the state police stated.

“The girls suffered death threats to themselves and their families and contracted a debt of about 30 thousand euros. Thanks to the strong power of intimidation deriving from the submission to the ‘Ju-Ju’ rite, a variant of the voodoo rite, the suspect was able to convince the young women to escape from the reception centers, where they were placed after arriving in Italy.

“The investigation began after the complaint of a young migrant who had just arrived in our country, who, unaware of the fate that awaited her, and only after being subjected to physical and psychological violence by the ‘guards’ during her stay in Libya, decided to ask the police for help.”

According to investigators, the trafficking suspect facilitated at least eight girls’ travels. She also enabled the prostitution of two other girls in the national territory.

The suspect had accomplices in Nigeria and Libya who managed the girls in the various passages on their way to Italy.

“In Nigeria, an employee in the recruitment and submission of the ju-ju of the victims, and a travel care officer, who was responsible for receiving the sums necessary from the suspect to pay the ‘smugglers’ (intermediaries) for the services they provided, such as buying food or managing relationships with the right people who can better and faster meet boarding requests [sic],” said the police.

“Among other things, the investigators also shed light on the numerous transactions of money, proceeds of prostitution, from Italy to Nigeria, which the woman, apparently without sources of income, would have been able to send, over time, using the banking services of other compatriots or through an untraceable system of informal banking.

“The money transferred came to the accomplices and was used to be invested in new trips and for real estate purchases in Nigeria.”

There are at least 70,000 prostitutes working in Italy. Prostitution is not illegal in Italy, neither is it regulated, but trafficking and modern slavery are. Italy’s Legislative Decree No. 24 of March 2014 criminalises placing a person in conditions of slavery or servitude and the sale and purchase of slavery.

The Global Slavery Index states that Nigerians are the most common migrant group at risk of being exploited in Italy’s sex industry.FIJ

Xenophobic Attacks: Nigeria Reschedules Evacuation Flight for Citizens From South Africa

The Federal Government has rescheduled the airlifting of the first batch of Nigerian citizens willing to return home from South Africa, following recent reports of renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Black foreign nationals in parts of the country.

The announcement was made on Monday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who said the evacuation exercise initially planned for Monday has now been shifted to Wednesday due to logistical and operational considerations.

According to the ministry, President Bola Tinubu has approved five evacuation flights to be operated by Nigerian carrier Air Peace, as part of efforts to safely repatriate citizens who have expressed interest in returning home.

Ebienfa explained that the first flight is expected to convey about 270 Nigerian returnees from Johannesburg, while additional flights will follow in subsequent batches until all registered citizens are evacuated.

He also confirmed that the ongoing screening and verification of Nigerians willing to return has been extended to Wednesday to allow more affected persons to be captured in the process.

“So far, more than 500 persons have been screened and cleared,” he said, adding that the extension was necessary to ensure that all eligible returnees are properly documented before departure.

Officials said the screening exercise is being coordinated by Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria in collaboration with South African authorities and relevant international agencies to ensure a smooth evacuation process.

The Federal Government’s decision comes amid renewed concern over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where reports of attacks on foreign nationals have triggered fear among migrant communities and prompted several African countries to take protective measures for their citizens.

Nigeria had earlier opened registration for citizens willing to return home following the unrest, with over 1,000 Nigerians reportedly indicating interest in voluntary repatriation due to safety concerns, harassment, and insecurity in affected areas.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safe return of all Nigerians who wish to leave, while continuing diplomatic engagement with South African authorities over the protection of foreign nationals.

Authorities also noted that all necessary permits and clearances for the evacuation flights are being secured to avoid delays, with the first aircraft expected to depart Johannesburg in the evening of the revised date.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that updates will be provided as the evacuation exercise progresses.

NLC, TUC Threaten Nationwide Shutdown Over Escalating Insecurity

Organised labour has threatened a nationwide industrial action over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, warning that workers may be forced to shut down economic activities if the government fails to curb the growing wave of terrorism, banditry and kidnappings across the country.

The warning was issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during engagements at the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

The labour centres said the persistent insecurity facing many parts of the country has become a direct threat to the safety, livelihoods and productivity of Nigerian workers, stressing that no nation can achieve sustainable economic growth while citizens live in fear.

According to the unions, thousands of workers now face daily risks while travelling to work, conducting business or carrying out official duties, as incidents of kidnapping, armed attacks and violent crimes continue to rise in several states.

The labour leaders noted that insecurity is no longer limited to isolated communities but has spread to schools, hospitals, farms, highways and workplaces, disrupting economic activities and deepening hardship for ordinary Nigerians.

They expressed concern over recent abductions involving teachers, schoolchildren and other citizens, arguing that the situation has exposed workers and their families to unprecedented dangers.

The threat of a broader labour action comes amid growing support from organised labour for the ongoing strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in some affected areas over the abduction of teachers and pupils.

READ ALSO:

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, recently backed the teachers’ action, describing it as a necessary response to the country’s worsening security situation.

Ajaero said workers should not be expected to perform their duties under constant threats to their lives, warning that organised labour may be compelled to mobilise nationwide solidarity actions if governments fail to take stronger steps to protect citizens.

He maintained that the safety of workers must remain a priority, particularly in sectors such as education, healthcare and local government services, where employees often operate in vulnerable environments.

The labour unions further argued that the security crisis in Nigeria has become both a humanitarian and economic challenge, discouraging investment, reducing productivity and worsening the cost of doing business.

While calling on federal and state governments to take decisive action against criminal groups, the unions urged authorities to move beyond public assurances and implement practical measures capable of tackling terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

They also called for intensified efforts to secure the release of victims currently being held by kidnappers and other armed groups across the country.

Meanwhile, the labour centres dismissed reports suggesting that negotiations were progressing on a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage, describing claims by some state governors as misleading.

According to labour officials, no agreement has been reached on such a figure, insisting that discussions on workers’ welfare and remuneration remain ongoing.

The unions warned that continued failure to address workers’ concerns over security and welfare could trigger stronger actions from organised labour in the coming weeks.

The latest warning highlights growing frustration among labour leaders over the country’s security challenges, which have increasingly dominated national discourse amid recurring attacks on communities, schools and public institutions.
