Many killed as angry soldiers invade Bayelsa over colleagues’ killing in Delta

In the wake of the recent attack that claimed the lives of 16 soldiers and officers in Okuama Community, Delta State, Nigerian Army troops have reportedly launched a retaliatory invasion on Igbomotoru community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The soldiers, arriving in five gunboats, allegedly set fire to houses suspected to be the hideout of a militant leader believed to be involved in the earlier attack on the military personnel in Delta.

The tragic incident in Okuama resulted in the loss of an Army Commander, two majors, a captain, and 12 soldiers from the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State. Following the directive of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, an immediate investigation was ordered to apprehend the perpetrators.

Residents of Okuama community had already fled to neighboring Ughelli in anticipation of potential reprisals by the military. Subsequently, houses were set ablaze in Okuama before the troops proceeded to invade the neighboring Bayelsa community.

Reports from the area indicate that upon arrival, the soldiers opened fire on residents at the jetty before burning down three buildings suspected to be the hideout of the militant leader. The attack resulted in the loss of at least 11 lives, with efforts ongoing to locate other potential casualties.

The devastating military operation has left the community reeling, with significant loss of lives and property. Families are grappling with the abrupt disruption of planned events such as burials, facing additional financial burdens as a result.

Amidst this turmoil, appeals have been made to the Federal and State Governments, as well as the international community, to intervene urgently and restore peace to the affected communities.

Efforts to obtain official comments from the Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) headquarters were met with resistance, as the spokesperson, Major Adenegan Ojo, declined to respond to inquiries from journalists.

Sowore slams Peter Obi for visiting IBB

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, over his visit to former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, in Minna, Niger State.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, announced the visit via his X handle on Thursday.

He described the meeting as an opportunity to exchange thoughts on national issues with the elder statesman and wished Babangida a Happy New Year. Obi also noted that Babangida’s insights and guidance remain invaluable.

However, the visit has sparked backlash from Sowore, who accused Obi of hypocrisy.

In a post on his X handle, @YeleSowore, on Friday, Sowore referred to Babangida as a “Nigerian-ruiner” whose regime contributed significantly to the country’s challenges.

“How on earth could someone be returning from paying homage to ex-Nigerian-ruiner, Ibrahim Babangida, and then give his life to save Nigeria? Jokers!” Sowore wrote.

Obi’s visit to Babangida followed a condolence trip to Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi over the recent deaths of his mother and son.

Sowore’s reaction to Obi’s itinerary has become routine as the activist/politician always takes a jab at the former Anambra chief executive.

How to apply for Germany visa using the new application portal

Germany has launched a new online platform designed to simplify the visa application process for individuals seeking to work, study, or join family members in the country.

The digital portal, hailed by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock as “a real administrative revolution,” became operational on January 1, 2025.

Accessible globally, the portal allows applicants to select from 28 categories of national visas and is available to all 167 German visa offices worldwide.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise the immigration process and address Germany’s pressing shortage of skilled workers.

“Every year, Germany is short of at least 400,000 skilled workers,” Baerbock noted.

“At times like these, we cannot afford to downright put the best off coming here to roll up their sleeves because of long paper application forms and even longer waiting periods.”

The Foreign Minister emphasised the importance of a digital-first approach, stating that Germany, as an immigration nation, requires “a national visa process that is state-of-the-art — modern, digital, and secure.”

This reform aims to mitigate the challenges migrants often face with German bureaucracy, providing a streamlined and efficient alternative to traditional paper-based systems.

By simplifying visa access, Germany hopes to attract skilled workers and ensure a more inclusive and responsive immigration system in line with modern demands.
