Rivers: Police declare ex-militant leader wanted

Police authorities in Rivers State have officially declared Gabriel ‘General’ Asabuja, a former Niger Delta militant leader, wanted following his provocative statements in a viral video amidst the ongoing local government council crisis.

This announcement was made by the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Commissioner Disu condemned Asabuja’s actions, emphasizing the panic and concern generated by his threats in the state and beyond.

He assured the public that law enforcement has initiated actions to apprehend Asabuja, stressing the seriousness with which such threats are being handled.

The crisis in Rivers State stems from disputes between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, escalating recently over the leadership of local government councils.

Governor Fubara’s decision to install a caretaker committee after the expiration of council officials’ tenures sparked protests and opposition from Wike’s supporters.

In response, the police have issued warnings against any form of violence, affirming their readiness to maintain peace and apprehend individuals inciting unrest.

Commissioner Disu reiterated that Asabuja’s defiance in response to police invitations will not deter efforts to bring him to justice.

Bandits abduct traditional ruler, others in Kaduna

Bandits on Saturday kidnapped Ashiru Sherehu, the traditional ruler of Tunburku in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Sherehu was abducted while returning from his farm.

The area, part of the Fatika district, has been plagued by banditry, making it increasingly dangerous for local residents. Ahmadu, a resident, noted that fear of abduction or death has kept farmers from working their fields just a few kilometers away from the town.

Hussaini Umar, the Sarkin Fadan Galadimawa and another traditional leader in the community, confirmed the kidnapping. He stated that the village head was taken around 5:00 pm on Saturday while returning from his farm.

“The bandits stopped him and took him away. We haven’t heard from them yet,” Umar said.

On Sunday afternoon, two more farmers were kidnapped in Sabon Layi under Kidandan Ward while working on their farms.

Witnesses were unable to intervene due to the bandits being armed.

Umar expressed his concern over the increasing attacks on farmers and acknowledged the efforts of soldiers in the area. However, he urged the government to deploy more security personnel to address the escalating insecurity.

The Kaduna State Police Command has yet to comment on the incident, and attempts to reach the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, were unsuccessful.
