Dismissed NECO officer in court over certificate forgery
Dismissed NECO officer in court over certificate forgery
A former National Examination Council (NECO) staff member, Mrs. Rose Deffi, has been arraigned in court for allegedly forging the certificate she used to secure employment with the organization. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) brought charges against her following an indictment in 2020 during NECO’s nationwide certificate verification exercise.
This exercise led to the indictment of 89 NECO staff members for using fake certificates. The NECO Governing Board subsequently approved the dismissal of the indicted employees, and their cases were referred to the ICPC and the Nigeria Police Force for prosecution.

ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare informed journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that Mrs. Deffi’s trial was initially scheduled for May 30, 2024, before Justice G.D. Fwomyon of the Plateau State High Court. However, the trial was delayed due to her absence. The court ruled that Mrs. Deffi should be served the charge sheet through substituted means and be produced in court by her lawyer at the next hearing.
Last Friday, when the case was called, Mrs. Deffi pleaded not guilty to all seven counts of forgery against her.
“In light of her plea, ICPC counsel Mr. O.G Iwuagwu requested another date for the commencement of the trial,” Bakare said. “The defence counsel, Mr P.M Lere, did not oppose this but asked the court to consider the bail application for his client.”
The ICPC counsel did not oppose the bail application but requested the court to set conditions to ensure Mrs. Deffi’s availability for trial. Justice Fwomyon granted Mrs. Deffi bail in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case to September 26, 2024, for the commencement of the trial.

A 54-year-old Italy-based businesswoman, Tina Uyi, escaped death by whiskers in the wee hours of New Year’s Day after her ex-husband, Osaro Ahunwan, 55, allegedly set her house ablaze in Edo State.
The incident occurred at Iduomwina Street, Off Tipper Road, in Isihor community, Benin city.
Tina sustained third-degree burns in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed private hospital in Benin city.
The victim was said to have her travel documents and lost a huge sum of money both in local and foreign currencies including packages from her friends in Italy to their loved ones in Nigeria to the inferno.
According to an eyewitness account, Tina who returned to Nigeria from her base in Italy on December 31, 2024, heard a loud bang on her window while coming out from the bathroom
The eyewitness revealed that upon inquiry, Tina discovered it was her estranged husband, Osaro who allegedly banged the window, demanding entry into her apartment.
She was said to have allegedly refused to allow her ex-husband into her apartment, claiming that their relationship had ended as her family had returned her bride price since April 2024.

Osaro was said to have been infuriated by Tina”s refusal to allow him into her house and allegedly threatened to burn down her apartment and harm its occupants
“Despite Tina’s plea for him to leave the promises, Osaro reportedly shattered the glass windows, doused the apartment with Petrol, and set it on fire through the help of a lighter and fuel, leaving the entire apartment completely razed.
“The inferno quickly engulfed the building, but neighbours intervened and successfully rescued Tina’s elderly parents (who are nonagenarians) from the flames,” the eyewitness narrated.
“It took the frantic efforts of men of the Edo State Fire Service to put out the flames that wreaked havoc before their arrival”, the source said.
Tina, who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune from her hospital bed, narrated that sometime in 2023, Osaro had allegedly threatened to kill her and himself as well.
“Osaro destroyed my Lexus(330) Jeep when we had a misunderstanding. He likes too much control and is very suspicious; even when I am out shopping and he calls, as soon as he hears a male’s voice, he abuses me and calls me names,” she narrated.

“So because of his violent and overbearing character, I decided to quit the marriage that lasted less than 2 years”
It was gathered that the Police in Ekiadolor have arrested the suspect, and his accomplice, Odaro Ovia Robo (Tina’s elder brother), over the incident.
According to the publication, during interrogation, Osaro confessed that Tina’s elder brother, Odaro Oviarobo, popularly known as “OD,” provided him with detailed information about his sister’s (Tina) return itinerary.
He was said to have admitted that he paid Odaro N5,000 (Five Thousand Naira) for information and revealed that he had hidden in Odaro’s apartment with the container of petrol.
The suspect further claimed that the lighter used to ignite the fire was also supplied by Odaro.
Sources disclosed that Odaro harboured grievances against his sister, accusing her of withholding financial assistance despite constructing a hotel.
It was further gathered that Tina had previously sponsored Odaro’s trip abroad in 2003, but he returned to Nigeria voluntarily after 10 years, leaving behind his partner and a baby girl.
Since his return, he has reportedly been unemployed and reliant on Tina for financial support.
The spokesperson of the Edo State Command, SP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, adding that both Osaro and Odaro remain in police custody as investigation continues.

Tinubu: Governors most important link to Nigeria’s development
Tinubu: Governors most important link to Nigeria’s development
President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday in Lagos, emphasised the critical role of state governors in driving Nigeria’s development and prosperity.
He said their leadership at the subnational level was central to achieving food security, economic prosperity and rapid national growth.
The President made the remarks during a visit by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF.
“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development. The Federal Government accounts for about 30 to 35 per cent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you.
“The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands,” he said.
President Tinubu called for stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments to address pressing challenges, including local government autonomy, agricultural productivity, and currency stability.
Expressing his commitment to local government development and autonomy, the President stressed its importance for grassroots development and dispelled rumours of disagreement with the governors.

“We will not fight within us. I will drive the change. You control your local governments. You can restore hope by effectively fulfilling what the people expect at the grassroots level.
“There were gossips that we had disagreements on local government autonomy. No. Just drive development at the local government.
“Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration. Let’s do it together and ensure Nigeria is better off for it,” said Tinubu.
He urged governors to prioritise agricultural growth as a pathway to economic stability.
“We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure the situation of our currency improves. Nigeria will see prosperity, but it requires consistent effort from all of us,” he said.
He also urged the governors to take pride in their efforts and acknowledged their progress across the states.
“There is no state we cannot visit and be proud of its development. We have better allocations now. Let me take the abuse; you take the privileges. Together, we will build a nation we are all proud of,” he said.
Reflecting on his leadership journey in the last 19 months, the President expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to thrive given the resilience and leadership demonstrated by the administration.

“I am glad I asked for this job, and Nigerians gave me the mandate. We’ll be on this voyage together. I thank all of you for where we are today and where we are heading,” he said.
Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara, acknowledged the tangible progress made under President Tinubu’s leadership.
“The policies are working. In agriculture, I was in Jigawa. The complaint in Jigawa was that there was a bumper harvest, but because of the strength of our currency, traders exported the harvest.
“So, most of us are encouraging ourselves to buy bumper stocks into our silos, store them for the rainy day. So, in terms of agriculture, the policy is working.
“We’ll continue to deepen that and ensure we are 100% sustained in food security and feed the whole of West Africa,” he said.
The governor urged the President to visit various states to see the ongoing transformations and progress firsthand.
He assured the President of the support of the governors, particularly in contributing to local security architecture to further enhance the nation’s security.
“I must confess that I have not done two years in this administration, but I’ve done more projects in two years than in the four years of my first term.
“We are getting more funding due to the restructuring of the economy. Yes, there is inflation, but we are overriding it,” the governor said.
