Abba Kyari: NDLEA Officers Allegedly Helped Drug Traffickers Evade Airport Security, Witness Tells Court

A witness in the ongoing trial involving the late Abba Kyari, former Deputy Commissioner of Police, has alleged that some officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) helped drug traffickers bypass airport security checks. The testimony, delivered at the Federal High Court in Lagos, has intensified concerns about corruption and lapses in Nigeria’s anti-drug operations.

The witness stated that certain NDLEA officials were reportedly bribed or compromised, allowing traffickers to transport narcotics through airports undetected. According to the testimony, this not only undermined the agency’s mandate but also exposed systemic vulnerabilities within Nigeria’s border and airport security framework.

During the proceedings, the witness detailed specific incidents in which drug consignments were cleared without proper inspection. The court was told that the late police officer, Abba Kyari, allegedly played a role in facilitating some of these activities, raising questions about the extent of collusion between law enforcement and criminals.

Legal experts say the revelations could have wide-ranging implications for anti-drug policy reforms in Nigeria. They noted that if proven, such allegations point to serious breaches of trust within agencies tasked with protecting the country from narcotics-related crimes.

So far, the NDLEA has not publicly responded to the allegations. The court is expected to continue hearing further witnesses in the coming sessions, which may shed more light on the internal dynamics and oversight failures within the anti-drug enforcement framework.

Observers have described the trial as a critical test for institutional accountability, highlighting the challenges Nigeria faces in tackling corruption and ensuring that its security agencies operate with integrity.
